I just saw a posting on Facebook that shows RYCA now having a proper Cafe Racer Fuel Tank.

I have not verified this on RYCA's website.

darn...I just had my bike painted. I would have used this. Although, it doesn't say its a direct replacement for the original tank...and the rear mounting is different.

It is 21" long.....how does that compare to the stock tank length?

I put 2.5 gallons in the other day. A smaller tank would not have been good.

This most likely isn't a tank for replacing the stock Savage tank to increase mileage - but it may be a good solution for the Cafe' Savage owners who don't want the stock tank that has been modified to fit the RYCA Cafe' by cutting the tank bottom off and reducing the height of the tank, the tunnel is made larger....and the capacity is down to 2.5 gallons from the stock 2.8 gallons. And...this new tank is far cheaper than the $799 that RYCA charges to do the modification to your tank (add $350 if they have to supply a tank)!

I think the savage tank is 21" long. Is this simply the Mojave tank that has mounting tabs welded into place?

The Mojave tank has much more rounded shoulders.

Indeed it is. Good sleuthing. I don't think this is intended to be a replacement of the modified Savage tank; the front mounting tabs are in a place that would make it difficult to mount on the bike because the mount would need to (or should be) welded to the upper tube.

I don't want to bash a company trying to make a profit, so I wont. But I will tell you this, in doing research for parts for my DRZ Tracker, I've stumbled upon the original source for many of the parts that RYCA sells. If I were to build another LS650 based cafe racer (which is always a possibility) there is little I would "have" to purchase from them.

With that said, they invested time and resources into a kit that is easy to bolt-on, well documented and quite frankly, was a lot of fun. I believe they are entitled to recover that investment. But because I've been through the process once, and I'm going through it again, I'm finding a lot of things at a fraction of the cost.

I think the front mount on that tank would be easy. Just drill a hole and use some all thread and few nuts. Many of us have done that before.

The question is weather it has enough room under the tank and will it sit low enough and will the petcock clear the engine. They are not listing that as a Savage tank replacement and they sell parts for other bikes.

All and all it looks like it would work, but until someone tries it, we don't know.
