Title: New Handle Bars
Post by SoC on 04/05/17 at 13:33:46

Hey All, I am looking to change out my buckhorns and came across this photo somewhere. I believe the owner may have been a member at one time. I am curious if anyone knows what the handlebars are on this bike. I have been looking for something like this or a pair of simple 1" window drag bars to bolt up but have not had much luck finding them. Thought is something with around an 8" rise.

Another thing and maybe it's something I don't understand, my local dealer insists my bars are 7/8" but when I mic them at clamps and just by controls they measure 1" OD, am I crazy?

Your handlebars and all the controls are 1"......your dealer is wrong.

Dave, Thanks for the reality check. I had talked with the parts guy at my local Suzuki dealer about getting a set of risers for an S40 and replacing mine, he claimed I wouldn't want to do that, too complicated? He swore I needed 7/8th bars to "just clamp up". I even showed him pictures of the mic on the bars and he claimed they couldn't be 1" or my controls wouldn't fit. So now I know I'm just insane, but not crazy.

No ,your dealer is! there 1inch bars on our bikes. He thinks there 7/8 because most jap bikes are.I haven't the faintest idea where you could get the bars in your pic. ,but you could do about the same thing with a set of risers and a drag bar.You have to be careful to use bars that are not knurled for Harley 's because the risers have different center to center measurements from our bikes. You can make higher risers using stock ones on top of deep well sockets with longer bolts.

Batman, Thanks for that info, dealer sells all 4 Japanese brands with one parts counter to cover them all. Extended risers would be last choice, I did read a thread previously about doing the mod you suggest, why the thought of justing getting OEM for an S40 came to me. I prefer the look though of the one piece unit whether a bar with attached risers or a window drag. With that I have searched the interweb extensively and not found anything with the proper spread center to center, that's why I asked about this particular bike, the guy found them somewhere.

As an after thought, does anyone recognize the muffler on that photo?

Thanks, for the lead on the Intruder, I will check into that. Any tips about removing the grips? They are original from 03 and don't seem to want to come off without destruction. They are in pretty good condition and I like them, though with new bars, new grips are probably the only way to go.

The muffler your looking at in the pic. is a HD dyna one of our favorites.

Batman, from what I've read it's a pretty easy install and a known quantity for jetting. Any experience with actually building one, i.e. getting some tube, breaking out the mig and sourcing baffles? I also have a local guy who say's he would/does it, but he only works on V-twins so he isn't too helpful, he would just do whatever design is you bring him.

There's all this stuff about EPA and changing mufflers stamped on OEM unit. If for example you do a dyna, can you get away with it at inspection. Do they even notice that stuff.

do the clutch side 1st
The plastic cap will just pry off.
1st break the glue bond by shoving a screwdriver in between the handlebar and grip.
squirt some wd40 as you go.  work the screwdriver around the grip.
if you got a long tip air nozzle, shove it in and blow it up like a balloon then pull off if it hasn't flown across the room already.

throttle side is more fun, it's not molded or glued together, but it has matching grooves and ribs.
takes a lot of effort and injunuity... enjoy.

Thanks All, I'm looking to get a little more stretch at the shoulders as I have a dislocation and it's more comfortable if it doesn't hang as much. Don't want anything like ape hanger's though. All have given me some direction and things to think about.

Where did you find the pic? That may help us to figure out what the bars are.

I didn't realize until you asked where it came from. I had done some research way back before I bought my bike and joined group. I think I found a link to it through just doing a google search of pictures of LS650 choppers.

some info... not much.

if that custom bar that was linked earlier is what you're going for...
I would spend a little up front and find a setup that you're comfortable with, even if it looks like crap.
Then get the custom bar made to those specs.
especially since you got an issue.
nothing worst than spending a whole lot of money for sumptin you don't like.

Soc,that warning is placed on stock mufflers by law (the feds make the bike companies do it,the Dyna will have it too) ,but state inspection laws don't usually even govern exhaust systems.(but you should check to see if your state does)you should be OK unless you're pipes are to noisy ,(ticket time). I would go with a Dyna muffler ,they are relatively cheap, sound better, but are only a bit louder, and we can advise on jetting just by asking your elevation above sea level. between the Dyna and the rejettimg the bike it will run surprising better as many on this site will agree ,including me! A custom pipe will cost more an may not be the right size or have the correct back pressure to be easy to tune the carb to.If you what to go after market ,I'd go with a known manufacturer ,who already has a muffler for your bike. The chances of you coming up with a design and your friend building it right are rather slight ,and the bike may never run well.

I have Bitwell bars and their quality and service are awesome. You need the 1" bars and everything will work. You will either have to drill a hole or grind off the little nub in the controls from your bike. Personally I just ground it off to give me the flexibility. Easy to do with a dremel.

These are the Bitwell window bars.

Good Luck.

If you have a Mig wlder....you can make your own exhaust adapter.  If you can't find a proper size pipe to slide onto the header....you will have to take a piece of 1.75" ID tubing to your local muffler shop and have them expand the tubing to slip over the header pipe.

So here's the thing, since I discovered I found picture from the forum, it was posted by a member Gitarzan, he no longer is active. His last log in was in 2013. Thanks for all the info and helpful guidence.
