I ride a 1988 with 12,600 miles. I use full synthetic oil. When I let off the throttle (lagging throttle) a noise like a dried bearing will be heard. Later on after riding say 5 miles, the noise all but disappeared. Any idea what this might be? Thank you!

I'd check the cam chain tensioner before I rode it again.

There are a number of places and reasons for various noises.
You'll need to trace down where the noise comes from and what it sounds like before we can help you.

What's a dried bearing sound like?

Is it a rattle coming from down low on the left rear?

A whine from up front?

My brother even said the mirrors rattled.

The speedo sometimes rattles, put your hand on it and see if it goes away. Do the same for the headlight. Put your heel on the pulley cover. Feel by the oil filter cover.

I wouldn't start it till I checked the tensioner. When the tensioner spits its guts out it's nearly always fatal. That's not excessive miles, but they wear differently depending on average length of ride, and there's always the forces trying to make the chain a circle that increase with RPM. If it's been making that noise for a couple of months but you just now heard it, could end badly.

I recently acquired this bike. I am still on my first full tank of fuel. I noticed this noise shortly after I began to ride. It does not get worse when the engine is fully warmed up, actually the opposite. If I pull the clutch in, the noise disappears. I am thinking it may be something to do with the cam chainr: like the chain is rubbing against metal-to-metal on lagging throttle. I will try and isolate the noise.

This Savage also emits one final 'poof' after I shut off the engine: Just like my 1400 Intruder used to do.

if it was the cam chain, noise wouldn't go away.

i'm thinking it's the drive pulley.

pull the pulley cover, rock the bike back and forth in gear to see if the pulley moves in relation to the nut.

I moved it back and forth with it in gear. When I rode to work there was no noise! Will I need parts, or can I tighten the pulley nut?

After work, I pulled the cover and found the pulley slightly loose, so I tightened the nut & put the cover back.

How loose is OK for the drive belt, anyway?

Oldfeller has a remedy in the tech section to fill in the gaps.
But I'd look and the splines and determine which is wearing... the shaft or the pulley. The pulley is easy to replace, the shaft isn't and it's hard to find the right one.

I checked the drive pulley, and the splines looked OK. But, I did not pull the pulley or belt off. Therefore it was only a partial observation. I re-installed the nut and bent the washer over the nut. I haven't had the same noise since. However I am still familiarizing myself with the sounds. So, I will ride and enjoy The Savage! Still on my first tank of fuel.

You should get a new front pulley,and you need to find a product called Bearing mount-used to hold auto bearings in place when you reassemble an auto motor.You also need to torque the nut to 94 ft/lbs and bend two sides of the locking washer up.If you don't take care of this and keep riding the bike you'll ruin the teeth on the shaft and need a replacement motor.(danger! danger! Will Rogers!)

I think it is important to remove the pulley nut, clean off the old threadlocker, and use new threadlocker when installing the nut.

I have a used but undamaged stock pulley I can give you if you pay the $ 7.15 shipping.

Dave ,Your right! I had Will Rogers on my mind earlier due to reading of the passing of Old_rider ,In the Café I was thinking of Roger's famous quote "I never met a man I didn't like " thinking it was a credit to Old_ rider that there was so many here that liked a man that they hadn't even met. (myself included)
