Title: White spacer mod
Post by Tpot on 03/22/17 at 18:27:58

Where do I find the washer used to replace the white spacer on the needle? I know its a #4 washer but when ever I asked the employee at a hardware store they have no idea what I am talking about

All stores are not created equal.
Find an old man.

You can just use the  stock spacer ,it's plastic,by sanding it down.Lay a piece of sandpaper on a flat surface or a piece of glass and slowly remove as much as you think you might need to I'd start with about 25% ,If you over sand you can still look for the washers.

Talk to Lancer. He may sell you just a Washer or 2. He also sells the entire kit to rejet the carb.

the  stock spacer is the Correct diameter and has the correct size hole. Great model for buying washers.

ok..couldnt you order one from say bike bandit..a regular washer and then ..sand it.. i would think the price would be reasonable...just how long to get it mailed to you...that is the stock washer, i am speaking of... then you could modify it..as he said sand a bit off..and go from there..

we do this in model railroading..some bolster pins are to long...just sand a bit ..you can always take more off..but cant add back on..
:)

Pam,

Wait for someone to verify this, but I think it is a #4 washer. I bought a whole package of them years ago at an ACE Hardware store. The washers  that I purchased are made of brass.

If anyone sends me a self addressed stamped envelope I will send a few to them.

Or if you have a decent hardware store near you they will have them.

Suzuki has a standard groove width of .035" .9MM, which is what I used as my measurement for raising the needle. My spacer now measures .075" instead of .110".

In stead of a hardware store go to a nuts and bolts specialist and while you're there you can grab some hex head bolts for the carby.

Yeah I did a rough measurement of 1mm and I measured the plastic washer at 2.5mm so in the end I just left the spacer and moved it down a notch pretty well the same effect as leaving the middle notch and halving the spacer.

The washer you are looking for is a "#4 Machine Screw" washer.  Most small hardware stores and Big Box stores only carry fasteners that have sizes like 1/4", 5/16", and they may even have some of the larger Machine Screws like #10 and #12 - you will have to find a really good "old school" hardware store for the smaller machines screws.  I did find some brass washers in the #4 size once - but the outer diameter was too big to fit into the recess in the carb slide....it is a more certain bet if you find the plated steel #4 washers.

Try to find a local hardware store like Ace.....or an industrial supply store....or maybe Graingers or Fastenal.  Getting them mail order will be expensive for shipping .....the washers likely are only going to be 4 cents each.

I lost my white spacer also.  It's under the workbench somewhere.  It runs fine w/o it.  Will check mileage when weather warms.

If your running with no washer ,your running very rich ,and your mileage will suffer greatly ,and you may even foul your sparkplug .I don't think any of us use less than 1/2 washer(2-#4 brass washers) ,and that is usually a  stock bike at or near sea level.

I have not noticed any black smoke.  My exhaust and air cleaner have been made less restrictive.  I suppose you could say the engine been 'molested'. Elevation ranges from 600-1400 ft above sea level.

Working through a carb problem myself on a customer's bike, so would someone care to point out the spacer you're discussing?

I'm thinking it is #6.  By modifying it, you will be raising the needle, which will richen the mixture.

The spring #9 applies pressure on the clip #7 installed in the needle #10, the spacer #6 limits how far the needle is pushed up toward the plate ##.

The part #6 is the plastic washer ,Ace hardware carries the #4 washers in brass , even at sea level where the bike needs to be richer you should be running 2 washers. You remove the stock washer and replace with 2 or 3   #4 steel washers , usually 3 if your elevation is above 1000 ft. when you put the plate back in there is a small dimple close to the top of the needle, be sure the protrusion faces down.

If you are buying brass ones - check the OD.  I bought #4 brass washers and they had too large of an OD, and would not fit into the recess in the slide.

One member on this forum had the same problem - he put the washers onto a #4 screw, tightened the nut down, installed the screw into his drill, then held the washers up to his grinder to cut down the OD of the washer.  (I couldn't find the thread where he posted this solution with photos).

Dave, you've got me wondering now. I bought a few #4 washers at my local Ace hardware. I don't remember them not fitting correctly. The bike runs great but now I'm wondering if the washers don't really fit.  :-?

If your engine is stock, running without any spacers on the needle will result in a RICH midrange, decreasing fuel economy and engine efficiency.
The JETSET is inexpensive for what you get; 3 main jets, 3 pilot jets, 3 washers, a float bowl gasket and shipping is included for US addresses.
$29.95

If you just want the washers I will send some to you.
