Title: This makes me wonder Post by Turulszem81 on 03/21/17 at 12:12:29 Hello there people I want to ask which I wanted to ask for a long time. Why people remove this thing from the engine, I mean doesn't rain crappity smacks up the sparkplug this way? http://imgur.com/a/mJRtK |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Gary_in_NJ on 03/21/17 at 12:14:59 I removed mine because I think the covers look like tacked-on plastic. Given that it IS actually tacked-on plastic, that kind of makes sense. I want to see the engine...not chromed plastic. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Dave on 03/21/17 at 12:28:42 The chrome covers are a styling element - they really don't serve any purpose that I can see. When it rains - most of the rain comes from the front and is also thrown off the front tire. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by hotrod on 03/21/17 at 12:43:09 It's ugly and sissy looking. |

Yes, they probably hold dust. :) Honestly, they don't do a darn thing but get removed when they are in the way. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Dave on 03/21/17 at 13:19:16 If you want to cook a foil wrapped potato up there.....the covers may help to the potato from falling off the head when you change lanes! ;) (Is that why Harleys make a sound like....potato,potato,potato,potato?) |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Ed L. on 03/21/17 at 15:52:58 I just don't like the look of them which is why I removed them from my bike. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by jcstokes on 03/21/17 at 16:33:06 I DO like the look of them, which is why I keep them on, it's a question of aesthetics, either you like them or you don't, and some have strong feelings about them. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by batman on 03/21/17 at 16:49:35 I run the covers,I think the recess around the sparkplug and decomp cable and bracket to be pretty ugly. I believe Suzuki thought to make the motor look like the old panhead Harley, more suitable to a cruiser ,in the 80's than an overhead cam ,modern motor. In the end it's all a matter of choise.(Gary their pot metal like the carb not plastic.) |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by old.indian on 03/21/17 at 17:13:46 I prefer the look without them and they only get in the way when I'm checking the valves etc. |

Same here. It looks unfinished to me without them. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by ohiomoto on 03/21/17 at 20:02:44 Either way works for me. If they made the head cover a little nicer I'd probably ditch them for sure, but I think I'm keeping mine. I think the motor is one of the more striking features of the bike and the covers tend to make it stand out a bit more. Makes it look taller an more stunning. I guess it depends on what you like. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by hotrod on 03/21/17 at 20:44:46 Flat black with a lot of holes drilled in them might look ok. |

That would make for a distinct look. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Dave on 03/22/17 at 04:09:01 Here is a pair in black that I can sell you....no holes. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1484314272 If I could find some.....the head caps from a ST400 Tempter would work for me! They have fins cast into them and look more like a functional part of a cylinder head, and they would bolt right on to the Savage - however the Tempter does not have a compression release - so the left cap may need to be altered. http://i63.tinypic.com/wbaoag.jpg |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Gary_in_NJ on 03/22/17 at 05:05:41 That does look a lot better...not just the head...the whole bike. I wish Suzuki had imported that machine to the US. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Kenny G on 03/22/17 at 06:15:50 Parts are still available for the Tempter. Kenny G :-/ |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by justin_o_guy2 on 03/22/17 at 06:21:52 Suzuki shop, how can I help you? Parts, please. Parts, this is John, How can I help you? Uhh, Yeah, have you got access to Tempter parts? Yep, whatchya need? I need one of everything,,, That's gonna be IckSpenSeive. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Kenny G on 03/22/17 at 06:40:38 Justin, If I could afford the frame and fuel tank I could make a proper motor bike. Kenny G :-/ |

I don't know how to access a parts list.....it is not available on any of the online parts suppliers that I have seen. I did a search on the eBayUK to see if parts could be found....didn't see much. I don't know for sure where the Tempter was sold - I believe Japan was one of the countries it was sold. I have never tried to access an eBay site for Asian countries. |

Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by Kenny G on 03/22/17 at 07:02:28 Dave, http://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/c/suzuki_motorcycle_1983/parts Mid 1980s Tempter parts are listed and available but I don't see a price on the frame or the fuel tank. Kenny G |

Kenny: That is not the ST400 Tempter. The US got a GR 650 which is a twin cylinder Tempter and it is not a bad looking bike - but it is not based on the Savage engine. |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by ohiomoto on 03/22/17 at 07:49:17 I think the GR650 tempter is sort of an ugly duckling waiting to become a swan. I've been eyeing up a few, but parts are hard to find (especially starter parts!) |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by old.indian on 03/22/17 at 07:53:50 I want the Tempter's head covers, AND that drum front brake. 8-) |
Title: Re: This makes me wonder Post by batman on 03/22/17 at 08:31:47 I have to agree ,if our head cover looked as nice as the tempster 400 single I wouldn't run the chrome covers either. |

I suppose if you're inclined to keep the covers, the holes would help. And they do. But, it is ultimately a matter of taste. It just seems the Zuki designers agreed that dipping the bike one more time in the chrome tank would finally convince us it was a Harley. I suspect I'm swayed by the look of the SR500. http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af179/Woodroid/Savage%20Drilled%20Cover.jpg |
