Title: Buyer didn't transfer... Post by dontwannapickle on 03/17/17 at 10:11:25 So apparently, even 11 months after selling my Savage, I still own it. Found a note in my mailbox to call the guy that bought my bike last spring. Sez he never registered the thing and his GF burnt up all his sh-tuff in the front yard, including the title. Wondered why it still showed up on my list of vehicles needing tags a few months ago. Bubba, yes that's his real name, wants me to apply for lost title. Hope this goes well for him... |

Title: Re: Buyer didn't transfer... Post by Ed L. on 03/17/17 at 11:32:46 As long as you have a registration or plate number you can apply for a lost title as the original owner and then have it transferred over to Bubba. I've had to do it a couple times with lost titles. |
Title: Re: Buyer didn't transfer... Post by piedmontbuckeye on 03/18/17 at 14:56:37 That's a great reason to do a legal Bill of Sale on any transaction like that. Legally, you are still the owner and could be held liable for the bike and anything that it might do (like be in an accident, etc.). You need the signed bill of sale to protect yourself. |
Title: Re: Buyer didn't transfer... Post by justin_o_guy2 on 03/18/17 at 16:13:35 You can call your insurance company and ask what liability you could be open to. If anything, ask what you can do to protect yourself. |
Title: Re: Buyer didn't transfer... Post by piedmontbuckeye on 03/19/17 at 06:37:49 When I recently sold my BMW, I talked to my local banker who advised me on protection about the money changing hands, but he also printed up a legal (here in South Carolina and put out there by the state) bill of sale. He said that I should do up two copies, one for me, and one for the buyer. Both signed and filled out with correct numbers, etc. |

Always do a Bill of Sale. In Minn, if the thing is a, ’titled’ thing. their is a little tab, (tear off), which denoted the date, of sale. If your state has one, FILL IT OUT. Or do a Bill Of Sale. (Most do Not) Then if you get notice of, ’new tabs’ toss the notice. You don’t own it, why are you getting new tabs ? Many years ago, sold a car, 11 months left on new tabs. I got a Notice 10 months later, for, 20 parking tickets due. (The Buyer, NEVER re-registered the car) I called the State, faxed them the copy of the, (tear off title portion) showing the date, and the person who bought the car. And telling them, NEVER, to contact me again, for Someone else’s, Misuse of the Vehicle, that THEY BOUGHT ! Minn, one used to be able to transfer a Title. NOW, to Transfer a Title, you HAVE to buy Plates, AND Tabs, AND have Insurance? WTF. Insurance/Plates/Tabs, when your gonna build on it for 2-4 years, BEFORE, it hits the road? Just Keep your Paperwork, THEN, do the Ins/Plates/Tabs, When it is going on the road. But if it has, current Tabs/Lic. Transfer it. Cause the PO, is NOT gonna pay for your Tickets ! Sez he never registered the thing And that is, YOUR Fault, How ? If it is legitimate, and he is not Spamming you, Fine, Do what he asked, but ANY, out of pocket money you have to pay, He pays you, FIRST ! Here, applying for a, 'lost' title, is NOT FREE ! Many Many, Many, Years ago, Bought a Dog. ‘Promise’ of AKC Papers to come. Never did. (After Repeated Attempts) As the Dog, was NOT, AKC Registered. (Or could not be, cause I got no Papers) It was Only a good Hunting Dag, Nothing More. Learned my Lesson ! |
