Title: Suzuki S40 won't start
Post by ZenThumper on 03/12/17 at 13:53:49

Did a complete rebuild on my s40 and got it all put together today.  Put some gas in and tried to start it up.  It turns over with no problem but does not start.  Tried numerous times to see if it just needed Gas into the carb but still nothing.  Any suggestions?  Was thinking it was maybe the starter solenoid?  But really have no clue.

Put it on Prime.
The Savage is notorious for turning over fine but not starting.
The battery has to be hot to spin it AND make a spark.

ZEN

It turns over with no problem

Its not the starter or the solenoid .

Do ya have spark ?
Do ya have gas (drain screw at bottom of carb.)?
Do ya have compression ?  while ya got the spark plug out checking spark --- stick you finger in the hole to plug it , then turn the motor over --- 100+ # will move your finger off the hole ...  ::) ... woin't hurt a bit ...  ;D   .     Or borrow a compression tester from AutoZone .

Then turn your petcock to prime and see if fuel comes out the drain at bottom of carb

You are infected with a DISEASED, PUSS FILLED stock vacsucker petcock -- get rid of it

take a dose of Raptor manual petcock and call us in the morning .....

;D

BUUUT, make sure you get the correct Yamaha Raptor petcock from a Yamaha dealer, or reputable EBAY seller and not some cheapo thing to save money.

And don't forget to cap the nipple on the carb that goes to the puss filled infected petcock. You will be eliminating that vacuum hose.

Pull the hose off the carb and point it into a cup.
turn the petcock to prime, be ready to turn it back.
gas shoulda filled the cup lickity split, if not, raptorcock pronto.

put hose back on carb, turn to prime, take a plastic handled screwdriver and tap on the carb... sometimes the float valve gets stuck.

might as well leave the cup under the drain and confirm it's flowing.

Ebay is NOT your friend. You want the genuine Yamaha Raptor 660 (?) petcock. Anyone have the p/n off the top of their head?

Inside you carb. is a LITTLE TINY FILTER on top of the float valve.   Its super easy to stop-up.   I just removed mine (threw it as far over my shoulder as I could (Durn-Thing  >:())

The tank has a filter , my fuel line has a filter , so why does the float valve need one too !  ::)     Ya half to remove that little screw inside the carb. bowel ceiling and drop the needle -assembly thingiee , to even see it.

I was having a problem  "running out of gas" when I went to pass the pokey vehicle in front of me .... you know the 45 in a 55 Zone type ... then run out of gas before I'd get around them.  Ain't no more of that non-sense after giving that (tinny little thing ) a pitch !

made me feel so much better !  ;)

I guess that filter is there to keep from clogging the port that fills the float bowl. But what does it matter? If the filter is clogged or the passage is clogged, the float bowl won't get filled. It's 6 of one and half a dozen of another!

I have a 2006 suzuki s40 and the issue I have is it won't start. I can jump it by jumping it at the starter solenoid. I have replaced the starter, the compression solenoid a the starter (relay)solenoid. But won't start with the ignition button. When I try to crank it all I hear is a click.

You should hear 2 clicks, 1st one is the decomp solenoid.  2nd is the starter relay.

I would put a voltmeter or a light on the starter relay to see if you're getting a signal when you push the button.

So the clicking isn't coming from the starter solenoid. The previous one did that.

Hay Chelo

How about putting a test light or volt meter on the wire feeding the starter when you press the start button ?

That would determin the good or bad relay thing.

I took the decompression Senolid off mine when I put on the larger fuel tank because there wasn't room under the tank for it.  Well , I found : that with a stock engine I didn't need it.

It might be better to leave it on and working since Suzuki thought it needed  it ?

So , test for electron flow Voltage  at the stater with the start button pushed .  :-?

Auto Zone may have a test light  ?  You could ask for a 12 volt test light.  They loan tools out for the price of the tool and you can bring it back or not .

Recently I've seen test lights that have a digital voltage readout in the handle.
I'm wanting one of those.
