Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by Ruttly on 03/11/17 at 10:51:31 Absolutely love them , perfect for the den/man cave , the wife not so much ! I think I have enough spare parts to to build a SR 500 combination table with a lamp with a small battery powered clock where the kick indicator goes. A perfect next winter project ! |
Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by MMRanch on 03/11/17 at 11:35:01 Ruttly Just curious : What was it made you retire your SR-500 ? That is one of the bikes I never got , that I would have , if I had it to do over again . :-? |

Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by Ruttly on 03/11/17 at 13:17:47 MM , It's only in semi retirement. When I moved from the Bay Area to the Central Valley I only road my dirt bike. It's goin need some new hoses and tires to be road worthy. Then I bought my sportster so there it sits. My other SR left my stranded about 3 miles from home on a 95 degree day when the stator failed. Pushing a 380 lb bike 3 miles in 95 degree heat kinda pissed me off. So it will get the stator rewound before it goes anywhere.Sold the other SR a few years back after it got a rewound stator to a guy in Texas and last I heard he still rides it Dailey ! |

Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by MMRanch on 03/11/17 at 15:14:29 I have had THREE (3) Yamaha s in my life and all three have died from Alternator problems ... because of the wound rotors w/brushes, They do have powerful Alternators ... now here is a story of a burned out stator even after the SR500 had a permanent magnate rotor . Even the new SR-400 has the wound rotor and brushes ... will they ever learn ??? :( so I guess its best I never got a FOURTH ! ;) Thanks . :) |
Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by Ruttly on 03/11/17 at 17:16:21 MM , SRs are great bikes and the older ones didn't have brushes like the newer SR 400s , but the 500s had 2 problems the cdi was problematic but the stators were the real problem. I owned six running SRs and two or three parts bikes. There is a guy in the UK that makes a cdi , another guy in Georgia that rewinds the stators , and a complete ignition system for them too. The one I still own has wiesco h/c piston 518 cc mega cycle cam, mikuni vm36 & header with a super trapp with oil cooler , dual drilled front discs and the list goes on and on and on. It's return is nearing must finish the tracker and another bike before it sees light again. 8-) |
Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by Dave on 03/12/17 at 04:52:04 So what kind of an end table do you need to hold up a 90 pound single cylinder lamp? :-? |
Title: Re: You know you want one... Post by Ruttly on 03/12/17 at 07:15:57 Oh I have boxes & boxes of SR engines so I can assemble a totally gutted engine with some nice patina , it should be much lighter that way ! |
