Title: Cheapo Tire Cleaning.
Post by locomotiveman on 03/08/17 at 21:03:21

Talking to Chemical Engr. 'So..what exactly is in shiny Tire Dressing?'  ANSWER: ' 1-4% Silicone or 10-15% Glycerine and water'.  So I washed/scrubbed my filthy tires, (date CODE Jan2016) with a Citric Degreaser and 4 drops of Dawn detergent in hot water. THEN I rubbed a dab of Glycerin-based...NOT Mineral Oil-based hand lotion (Suave) on the sidewalls while spinning the dry tires. Presto. Cost less than 1 penny.  Anybody else dun it? Locomotiveman

Brilliant idea. Almost goes in the Farkle thread. Me? I think my tires are beautiful, just plain rubber. I don't need Vitalis or Afro Sheen or nuthin. I'm cleaning the rear wheel up, because I'm installing a Dave Diddit front and rear pulley setup.

Silicone is a No-No IMHO, but glycerin between Car wash cleanings?...can't see how it can gather too much crud. Locomotiveman

Personally, I don't like the tire shine look, but I like the clean tire look.  For years, since high school, I have used plain Gunk mixed half and half with kerosene.  Brush on with a cheap paint brush (on engine when warm, not hot!) and wait for a while, then spray off.  Repeat if lots of build up. Love the look and the smell.

I'm a little paranoid about putting anything slippery on a motorcycle tire.

Kris01, I get your point, BUT sidewalls only. With a rag. Road slime Cocktail of salt, motor oil, rubber dust, drizzle and Burrito leftovers are best gotten off tires. Do you pressure WASH your tires with slippery soapy water at Carwashes? Some people don't. I do...but then I hit RINSE. Millions of people spray on Silicone/Glycerin ArmorAll Meguires etc indiscriminantly. Dumb.  Locomotiveman

Absolutely right! Sidewalls ONLY...with a rag. No spray.

The sub-heading on this particular forum is Rubber Side DOWN!  ;) I like to stay upright!

I have a friend that calls Armor All, Harms-It-All. It's not good for anything.

I don't use any shiny product - I do scrub them with Bike Bright and a brush to keep the tires black and get the dirt off.

If you do want to use a shiny product.....don't put it on too thick, and ride careful for a few miles to get it worn off the tread.  And be careful with new tires...or a new bike!

Yeah, I totaled a Z28 , ran and got tires on it at lunch, going back to work, not hot rodding , it made almost half of a turn, and went straight into a tree.
Slickery stuff on things I want to be gripping stuff just doesn't add up. Increased labor, not on my agenda.

I know I'm a little weird when it comes to certain things. When I bought new tires for the bike, I took them into the shower with me and scrubbed the mold release off of them. I don't like my tires feeling squirrelly.

I'm not Judging, I'm really not..
I'm just not sure I would have admitted that without someone doing something painful to me.

A good healthy spin-out on a gravel road for a few 100 feet while riding the front brake is how I like to clean tires. Really. Scuffs road crud off like gum, oil, mystery meat.  Locomotiveman

Check out this video of a tire treatment that just showed up on my Facebook - from one, if not THE, leading hi-end automotive detail shops in the country - from Columbus, OH.

I remember reading an article about tire compounds. One of the ingredients used in the rubber is paraffin wax in order to lubricate the rubber. If you put any type of cleaning agent on the tire you wash out the wax that is impregnated I n the rubber. Tire manufacturers suggest use a stiff bristle brush only to clean your tire's. The brushing technique will pull up the wax in the rubber and give it a slight shine. If the tire's are old and cracking the wax doesn't pull out as well.i use a cheap wooden paint brush from the hardware store and I cut the bristles down to a 1/4" to stiffin up the brush. I scrub back and forth until the shine comes out. 8-)

Great technique. I may have to try that.

I have heard similar, but the problem is, is that you will wear down your tires before you ever come close to doing what you are describing.  Or...they will get too old before then.

I think the worst thing for tires is being exposed to UV rays.  That's why they sell covers for the wheels on camping trailers at campsites.  The other is being parked on plain dirt for long periods of time.
