Title: Compatable fuel tanks for cafe racer build
Post by miker2195 on 02/15/17 at 09:52:37

Hi I'm really close to being done turning my Savage into a cafe racer and I need a low profile gas tank.

Does anyone know of any immediately compatable tanks (to where I wouldn't have to mod) of any other type of bike that would easily fit into the savage frame and rear mount bolts?

I'm looking on eBay and seeing a few that may work but I want to know if anyone knows of any good ideas or other "sure things"

Thanks for the help

There really is not any "bolt on" tank that is available other then the modified RYCA tank.....I don't know if they will allow you to send in your tank to be modified if you don't buy their kit.

Go to the Bike Builds section at the top of the Rubber Side Down page, and you can see what the rest of us have done to put a fuel tank on our Cafe' bikes.  Some tanks are more work than others.....none are bolt on.

Yea i was hoping to avoid having to go the Ryca direction and was looking for any cheaper alternative really. Was hoping I wouldn't have to do any serious modifying but suppose I will if need be.

Im getting ready to do the seat and  delete rear fender so tank is really all that's left so there isn't a crazy rush I suppose.

Ill look in the section that you suggested and check out my options. I appreciate it

Ryca is real proud of that tank to the tune of $800 + shipping  :o

Yea I don't even want the same original tank modified by Ryca. I don't like the spedo hole being there and useless. Rather just get a normal low profile  tank and a tiny spedo and tach

I really like the Benelli Mojave 260 fuel tank and seat pan. Knowing what I know now this is the tank and seat pan I would put on any cafe build. The price is good too.

Hmm I think I saw these shopping around on eBay. The tunnel looks wide enough for sure. Do you know any good ways to go about mounting a tank like that?

i don't think the build is in the cafe build section, but someone used that setup. A search on the word "Mojave" should help you locate the builder. Reach out to him and ask, but I'm sure the word "welded" will appear in his answer.

It is Armen that is using that tank.....Armen scatters his build posts in various threads - it is impossible for me to collect them and include his build in a single thread in the Bike Build index.

Here is a link to one thread:

Awesome thanks a lot. Im looking into it right now and see I will most likely have to weld the inside mounting hooks onto the benelli tank. Ill contact him and ask him details. I appreciate the help

Yes, it is a very fine tank.

Armen isn't finished with that tank. Hes working out a good looking pattern to drill holes in it.

I found the tank on ebay from a seller that seems to have welded the inside mount hooks himself onto the inside on the tunnel.. I am messaging him now to see what the distance is because the hooks seem like they might just fit. The rear mount will need some kind of fitment for sure though.

Check out how one of the members (beaverteacher I think is his user name) on here used that tank.

Look at page 5: http://suzuki-s40-ratbrat.weebly.com/

I used a GT185 tank and made a simple mount to move the "ears" forward.  I made no modifications to the tank.  It's a tight fit over the decompression solenoid and coil. I made a bracket to secure the rear of the tank.

I posted a lot of detailed pictures probably starting on page 3 or 4: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1472222031

You could use the "ears" mod to mount that last tank you looked at.

Off topic, but that's a great build thread and a great looking bike. I'm glad you shared that. Dave, that should be linked in the build thread.

It already is in the Build Thread, and the link to his webpage is on the bottom of his first post:

THat link actually helps a lot. Ill be referring back to it for the seat as well most likely
All the parts are coming in the mail and should be another couple weeks at least  so I'm starting to get all my ideas together since it's a waiting game
All of these answers help

You should dig through all of the build threads.  Lots of great ideas in them.

Yea I have been its pretty good stuff. I liked the benelli tanks ever since I had the idea to turn her into a cafe but did not have the ideas to mount it. I've been trying to avoid getting anything Ryca as much as possible

Still hate the fact that I'm going to have to get the rear set bracket though. I think that may be too hard to fabricate for me
