Title: Motorcycle crash study
Post by engineer on 02/11/17 at 11:56:59

Interesting study about mc crashes.
How Virginia Tech studied motorcycle crashes
The VTTI researchers recruited 100 riders from age 21 to 79 in California, Arizona, Florida and Virginia. They outfitted their motorcycles with video cameras showing the rider’s face and forward, rear, left and right views. GPS and data loggers captured other information, such as brake pressure, acceleration, etc.
This is an article that summarizes the interesting points of the study.

Interesting study.

The single biggest surprise I got when doing my license training was finding out that a bike has a much longer stopping distance than a car. That might explain why so many of the accidents in the study were bikes hitting cars in rear.

Here's a really good demo. Both the car and the bike have ABS is in this test!

Thanks engineer. The more we know, the better riders we can be. At least that is the way I see it.

It is less painful to steer around a object than it is to panic and skid into a object !

I went and found pictures of the compound eyes of a fly, but couldn't get it to post.

I consciously watch leaves fall, flags wave, etc. If there's ANY movement anywhere, I've got my eyes on it!

Yeah but can you steer around it? Good to see everything that moves just don't stay focused for long, don't even focus on a threat , look for a way out bikes don't stop fast and skid a good distance, look to steer thru don't focus on them, look for the way out, don't freak out !

Boring repetition, buuuut you have three friends in motorcycling, the big gap in front of you and your two mirrors. Most other things animal, mineral or vegetable are your real or potential enemy.

Unfortunately, they leave out many factors that would one would attribute to being on a m/c.  Most blarantly, size factor.  The risks they site are for any vehicle.  But once the size factor increases risk decreases.

WOW!  I wasn't aware of how much I had taken for granted.  I always assumed that a bike could stop faster than a car/

I never ride aggressively so I don't tailgate, however, without thinking, I do find myself getting too close sometimes.

This new information will definitely help me stay back!

I know some experienced riders who just will not accept the idea that a car can pull up quicker than a bike. Even though I showed them the tests. They give a look like "yeah, but I could".  It's a very  counter-intuitive fact.

Some 30 years ago, I sold both my motorcycles as I had 2 small children.  On my 14 mile-to-work commute each day, I would have about 2 close calls a week.  I decided to sell as I didn't want the kids to grow up without a Dad.  Now, I ride, and I just don't want to be dead!!

So . . . I don't ride aggressively, and now, I will not tailgate so much!

That is a real eye opener! When I took the MSF course, the instructor said to ride "Naked and Afraid", meaning you have little protection and you should be ever vigilant and prepared to take defensive action. Now for a little anecdote: Two Rangers I knew at Fort Bragg (many years ago) both got their SGT stripes, and to celebrate went out and bought new Honda 750-4s. Wicked fast bikes. Both crashed within a week. The study points out that inexperienced agressive rider are 30 times more likely to crash. I guess they're right.

I read something years ago in a motorcycle magazine , in most cases if you survive your 1st year your second year Your chances are 50% better and so on and so on !

So when your as old as JOG you have no excuse for crashing your bike !
;D ;D ;D
