Title: Got pulled over....
Post by raydawg on 01/27/17 at 15:59:36

Yesterday morning, going to work, 4am.
Last RHT before I scoot down a grade and onto the ferry.

He asked me if I knew why he stopped me?

I said, "Not really, maybe because you is jealous on my bike?"  :-[

He said, "No, because I didn't stop."

I said really, I dumped it into first.

He ask, Did you put your foot down.

I said, I can't answer that yes, for sure.

He ran me through the puter, came back and said this was a warning, but to please be more careful, that he was sick and tired of picking us up off the ground.....

He was really sincere.

I believed him.

Got me to thinking.

I too get in a mode when riding.
Even tho its the same commute every day.

I decided to get back into enjoying it, as opposed to HAVING to do it.

I slowed down, not that I am a speed demon.

By doing such, I know I have reduced my risk, and I do enjoy the moment more....

Just thought I would share.

I stop and don't put a foot down. I don't stop for long!

That is a burr in my saddle too.
Most STOP signs could/should be replaced with YIELD signs.

If I come up to a corner and look both ways - and there is nothing coming - why should I have to STOP ??

STOP LIGHTS are one thing... STOP signs at intersections are another.
If there is nobody coming proceed with caution without coming to a full stop. They should be YIELD signs.

Same for me, slow to a pause, look both ways and go.  You gotta sell that look.

Rule book says wheel stop for 5 seconds, at least that's what I remember.

MSF said brief stop ok.

Probably the same for you, you just got somebody who didn't get any last night.

Same here, not always a foot down.
I was pulled over for the same reason once.
I asked him if I could circle the parking lot and demonstrate one for him.
I handed him my wallet, took off and turned around, slowed down and came to a stop in front of him.
For two almost three seconds I sat balanced, eased out the clutch and continued on, went around his car and came back and stopped and put down the kickstand and shut it off.
He asked how long I had been riding, I proudly stated "about 40 years", he said ok, your off with a warning, but the book says to put down your foot, I suggest you do it from now on.
I didn't feel so smug after that, because he could have given me a ticket, but I do it more than not now.

The BOOK says,,
I can put a foot down without being stopped.

Getting pulled over is so much better than being run over , ride safe !

if the wheels are not turning you are stopped ;)

It's getting near the end of the month...quotas to fill.  Easy target.

I agree. If the wheels aren't moving either direction, you're stopped, foot down or not. Stop means to cease movement not plant foot.

Post by Dave on 01/28/17 at 04:33:27

I would not be in support of changing STOP signs to YIELD signs.....in this area too many people already feel that stopping is optional and doesn't apply to them.  It isn't the "4 AM no traffic" kind of stop that Raydawg did that is a problem - it is the "distracted soccer mom" and "Ricky Rice Racer" and they barely slow down.........and they don't look down the road to see that someone else is approaching the intersection......and you know they are not scanning down the road looking for a motorcycle!

This is definitely one issues that makes it necessary to keep a headlight burning on the motorcycle - so the we are easier to see at a quick glance.

I will admit that I do the "no foot down STOP" a lot....especially when riding double with my wife.  It is far easier to slow down and keep the bike balanced at a crawl - than it is to put a leg down and hold up 1,000 pounds of bike and riders.

Ditto on not putting my foot down, and either crawl or full stop, but no foot.  However, the probably purpose of the "5 second rule" is to make sure that rider makes one last look before pulling out.

Another side question from above post about headlights on all the time - I agree, but have any of you added any lights that strobe (like rear when brake is pressed) or in front on & strobing all the time?  If so, where did you get them and cost?

They must be taught that line in international motorbike cop school because I've had it used on me, too. Didn't make any difference when I informed him that I've never been picked up off the ground by a cop...
Anyway, they shouldn't complain, its their job.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

8-)

I am with Dave on putting the foot down is more risky....
I have slipped numerous times on sketchy road surface.
That is why I love the savage, she is pretty easy to correct.

I guess they'd rather you topple over than to be t boned....

One point he was right about.
This corner has a crosswalk that the walk on ferry riders use.
There is a free parking lot between this corner and the ferry.

You all know how cagers look right pass us, their mind only looking for cars on coming.
He said I could hit a pedestrian.
Yes, I am only really looking for a car, as I think I would readily see a walker, however, that is a failed assumption on my part.

Call me what you like, but my previous ride was a Yamaha XT225. An amazing work of engineering, in it's own right. It was so maneuverable and well balanced, I frequently came to a full stop, and balanced upright for several seconds without putting a foot down. While I never rode it off-road, I can understand the usefulness of that feature. It had it's quirks, and due to the light weight was dangerous on the freeway. So enter the S40. No more balancing act, but a real kick in the pants. Did I mention that, due to the ground clearance and lack of ferrous material in the XT225, it would not trip stoplight sensors? A deputy sheriff that rode a Kawasaki 650 dirt bike tipped me to that one as I sat through 3 lights wondering if I would ever get a turn. No problems with the S40.

I've found myself riding sometimes because it's a nice sunny day, not because I want to. That's no way to ride! Do it because you love it, not because you have to. It's a far more enjoyable experience when you do it out of love!  ;)

When my son did his driving test for bikes he forgot to put his foot down as well.  The examiner dinged him for it but he still passed.  They are allowed three minor mistakes.

Some police don't like to see a fellow standing on the pegs when riding.  No law against it and I often do it when in traffic to see what is going on ahead.

You have considerably less control while standing on the pegs , while standing you are focusing too far ahead at freeway speed while lane splitting. Sitting you can better see cage drivers heads and react much faster and in full control. And we have the superman factor, while you are standing focusing too far ahead somethings happens just in front of you that split second longer it takes to sit and react or happens to fast to react while you are standing you hit a car still standing to test how far you can fly like superman, bad ending.Stand up to scope the field or to relieve your legs a minute but sit down that's why they put a seat on it ! Ride Safe !

I have never owned a flasher for the headlight - but I did add an LED emergency flasher up front and I connected it to my passing light switch (models after 2004 have that switch on the left handlebar).

The brake light flasher modules are cheap and easy to install.

https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/strobe-controllers/brake-light-strobe-module/195/

However Superbright LED's has an LED with the flasher built in, and it is a bit more expensive, far easier to install, and is far brighter than the stock bulb.....this is definitely a huge improvement in the Savage Tail light.

If you have more questions about the headlight/tail light flasher.....respond in the threads I linked or start your own thread - so we don't "Off Topic" Raydawgs thread too much.

I have another Suzuki thumper, a DR650.  I doubt you will convince a dual sport rider you have less control standing on the pegs. ::)  I also take the weight off the seat going over Texas gates and rail road tracks.

Flint , I commute 800 miles a week in my pickup and see way too many bikes down and the aftermath isn't pretty. I ride with confidence  and I'm sure they did too. $hit happens fast so ride safe and don't be a statistic.
Been riding over 40 years and it's seems the ground has gotten harder over the years, feel all those crashes, don't heal as well or as fast so it's important that we keep the Rubberside Down !

Stay focused , Stay alive !

+1. But standing on the savage's forward controls is a different matter for sure. Its something I have to do for brief moments going over a rough bit. Not something I'd be able to do long periods like on the DR.

I have also ridden over 40 years - closer to 50, and as I get older, I get more wary of everything.  I started when 14, back in 1963, and in HS, got bigger and bigger Hondas as I worked at a Honda/Marine dealer.

Went to college, then purchased several used BMW's and gave it up for 20 years.  Then 4 years ago decided to ride again.  However, I literally get "scared" everytime before I go out for a ride.  Not afraid of me, but of everyone else!

Needless to say, I ride very conservatively and not aggressive at all.

If I stopped at a stop sign for a full 5 seconds, these Colorado City Folk would run me over!

Not to mention the Harley riders.....
Not sure why they like to push Jap bikes, but I know as fact they do not like being behind one.

@raydawg....

The group I used to ride with was mostly HD riders. Nice folks & good friends, but they rode a little too close in formation for my tastes. One suicidal dog or deer & headlines could read "8 bike pile-up on U.S. Hwy 26 West...."

Sooo, I always rode "trail" at the back of the pack, where I could have some control over my space-cushion.

Too True! Once, while waiting at a stoplight on my XT225, one pulled alongside and advised me to "Get a F---in' motorcycle!" I responded kindly, "I didn't know motorcycles could do that." ::)

While wearing my "Harley Davidson" jacket and riding my Ninja 300, I had two riders pull up behind me and yell "Hey hope you know that ain't no harley"
I pushed up my modular front looked back (grungy looking beard and grandpa face) and low and behold they were on sportsters (big grin), I yelled back, " yeah, my road glide is in the garage, with my four other bikes."
"So why are you riding your girlfriends bike?"
I might add my jacket is old and sun faded, they were wearing those new faux leather vests.... yup, you know the type.
My bud kevin got a great laugh out of it, guess they didn't want to mess with to old grungy looking riders :)

In my own neighborhood I always stop foot down so I give a nice responsible impression to the folks I live by.
Otherwise, elsewhere I do the foot up stop. Around here almost everybody rolls through stop signs and half of them roll through stop lights too. But there's also quite alot of people who'll wave a bike though regardless of right-o-way which I find pretty generous.

As for the HD riding fashion victims I could care less what they think. The crusty old one lives across the alley from me is a jerk. He walked into my driveway to look at my bike one day, made a noise in his throat and walked away without even acknowledging my presence. He ever does it again I'll tell him he is trespassing. Let him go sit in his garage with his smug attitude debating on whether he wants to risk tarnishing his chrome or breaking down once a month or once every other month. His poor bike sits alot. I imagine he has to save up for towing fees before each excursion just to cover his ass.
Sport Adventure guys wave to me, rice rocket guys wave to me, big touring cruiser dudes wave, dual sport riders wave, people on japanese cruisers wave. the HD riders not so much. Fashion victims are unfriendly I guess.

GREAT story.....

However, its not Harley's fault.

Marketing assures sales, and vibrant future, a good thing for any business.
Fact is, I am willing to bet that is why they now offer the sportster with training wheels  ;D

I was recently riding down Riverside drive (Tulsa) when I came to stop light at same as the motorcycle policeman beside me did. I stopped and put both feet down. He kept both his feet up on the boards and started doing little wiggle balance checks to keep bike upright. Lasted quite awhile, and I was impressed. As for stop signs...I roll to a complete stop and look both ways and if nothing is coming at me and I'm still steady, I never put my feet down.
