Title: delkevic mufflers
Post by twhitus on 01/06/17 at 00:16:50

anyone have any experience with this brand?  ive been digging around trying to decide what muffler system i would like and one of these was listed on ebay.  the manufacturer has 4 kits just for the ls650/s40
im kinda looking at the 21" slash cut, they all have removable baffles and all the stuff needed to install.  i have yet to find a sound clip of one on our bikes but most the clips on youtube do sound pretty good.

The name sounds familiar but I don't know anything about them.
Have you looked at Cone Engineering ?

Good stuff & good prices.

I have a delkevic system on my Honda trials bike, high quality. Made of titanium & aluminum, when it arrived I thought they sent me a empty box,
Header & muffler doesn't weight much more than the box it came in !

I used a Delkevic can on my SV650S. Given the price, I think that the quality is very good. The sound is - awesome. Mine was purchased about 5 years ago, so I don't how their product has evolved. But given my experience, I wouldn't hesitate to use a Delkevic muller/pipe/can.

T Whit,

If my Dyna gives out I will be purchasing the Delkevic Slash Cut 21" Long Muffler Setup for my S40.

What I like most about the Delkevic is it is a complete kit ready to install.

I picked up a Delkevic muffler from their shop in Lakewood (CO) this morning. They had three out of the four Savage/S40 mufflers in stock. I ended up buying the short/slash cut end one. The one out of stock was the long one with the slash cut.

went over to the YouzTubez and found a lot of posts with Delkevic exhaust systems on other bikes.  Nicely made stuff!
Great sound, too.

I was impressed by the quality of their stuff. The muffler I bought is made of T-304 stainless steel (with at least 18% chromium and at least 8% nickel). Well built, and with all the parts to fit it to the motorcycle.

I talked quite a while with an employee there, who showed me their back room where they have quite a few bikes bound to England.

I plan to fit the muffler to my S40 tomorrow.

JLC
PS: I just got tired of waiting for the right kind of Dyna muffler to turn up!

How much $$ did it set you back ? Did it come with header pipe too ?

Title: Re: delkevic mufflers
Post by JLC on 01/10/17 at 20:42:18

$220.83 out the door. That was the pick up price. You hook up the muffler to the original header with a link pipe (adapter), supplied with the kit. Also supplied are a bracket and bolts. The kit also includes a tube of high temperature silicon.

Expensive, but obviously I though it was worth it, otherwise I would not have bought it!

I am going to run it with the baffle in place, but for those who like "loud pipes", you remove one bolt and the baffle slips out.

JLC...CAN you do a video of it on your bike ...please...when weather is good...love to hear it...really interested in that slash cut..thank you

My question is... does a direct bolt ...with the baffle out require rejetting ??? just curious..i can get the muffler...but wondering about baffle taken out..

That someone Builds an aftermarket for the Savage is cool.
The Supertrapp just costs Too Much, but can be tuned to the carb setup.

I don't see paying$200.00 for a muffler just to gut the baffle.
Get a Dyna for Twenty, and rip into it.

Post by twhitus on 01/11/17 at 05:03:34

so im planning on getting the 21" slash cut, i know its going to cost more then a dyna but i just prefer the looks of this one.  taxes are coming so that will be my treat with the refund, if i can convince the gf  ::)
there is a motorcycle salvage yard near me, i might take a few bucks and head over just to see if i can find anything unusual.

I am sure running the Delkevic without the baffle would be very loud, and require rejetting. The power will be down. I agree it would also be a waste of money, but maybe not that uncommon or surprising. Don't new Harley owners routinely have the dealer take off stock HD mufflers to install Vance and Hines or other straight pipes, which require a new bike tune? That can't be cheap.

I have not made a video for years, but I will make an effort when the muffler is on my S40, and see what I can come up with!

Title: Re: delkevic mufflers
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 01/11/17 at 11:37:56

Wouldn't it just sukk to gut the new pipe and discover that getting the jetting to work out is just not going to work?
Maybe it's gonna be obnoxiously loud,,
A straight piece of pipe, same length and diameter as the inside of the muffler and you can mock it up, see if you can tune it, see if your neighbors shoot at you,
Yeah, it's time and money,, just an idea.
Maybe slap a gutted Dyna on. The guy I got mine from had a bucket of them. The only one that had a baffle was twenty bucks.
The others were five bucks..
Cheap, easy, not Perfect testbed , but should get you in the ballpark.

Mufflers come and go. Different baffle , length, etc.  I think any gain in power will come more from a larger dia. header pipe, which can't be found, by itself,  anywhere that I know of.

Mac Exhaust has 2 different size headers , think it's 1.5" & 1.75"

Hey lancer...did you ever get the MAC you won installed? Would love to hear what it sounds like.

I installed the Delkevic short/slash cut muffler yesterday. With the link pipe, it is about the same length as the original muffler, but much lighter. This morning I tested it. Much more popping from the exhaust than before,  so I set upon removing the brass carburetor plug to adjust the air/fuel mixture.

I followed instruction from this forum: Drill pilot hole with a 3/32 bit, limit depth of drilling to 1/8" - 3/16". I had no luck pulling the plug out with a screw, and I could not find my dent puller,  so I came up with a third method: I used  a "speed out" (screw extractor) bit with an adapter on a 1/4" ratchet, and the brass pug came out real easy!

I set the carburetor using my newly installed tachometer, and the idle is around 1100 rpm. I did not have to touch the speed idle screw. No leaks anywhere, and the exhaust sounds great, but it is LOUD.

I did not ride the bike out of the workshop yet, but the engine seems more responsive. The muffler manufacturer states there will be an increase in power. I will give my "seat of the pants dynamometer" results later on!

A short video (using my old Nikon 5000 camera). The S40 is stock except for the muffler.  The sound at idle is good, distorted when I rev up the bike. I'll make another video with better sound when I find the time!

That sounds amazing!
Is that with or without the baffle?

That's with the baffle in place.

Too loud.

It's nice that you have a tac but you need to set the idle speed down to set the idle screw so you can hear the engine speed change ,then reset your idle speed back up.

Title: Re: delkevic mufflers
Post by JLC on 01/18/17 at 09:01:02

I just did what you said - yes, with the idle speed down, there is a lot more speeding up/down when adjusting the mixture screw, than doing it at 1000 rpm. On my bike, there is little range of adjustment between stalling one way or the other. The sweet spot is three turns out. I reset the idle at just over 1000 rpm.

Thanks for the tip, Batman!

that sounds so good..boy do I love the look of that pipe...DAVE DAVE DAVE... lol...help...hahahha
I am really set on getting this muffler too....is it difficult to chamge from one to other muffler????
Do you have to adjust the idle on the bike etc after you change mufflers??
;D

some times the stocker can be hard to get off.
but the real trick is to want to keep it, then it fall off all on it's own.

yes you probably will have to adjust the idle, and the mixture and maybe rejet.

Post by JLC on 01/18/17 at 15:21:55

Pam,

I first tried to get the muffler off with the header in place, then quickly discovered it was much easier to take the whole assembly (header and muffler) off as one unit. As my bike is nearly new, nothing is rusted so I had little trouble taking things apart, except for the two bolts with Japanese Philips screw heads on the back of the heat shield (where the muffler meets the header). I needed to use my manual impact driver there, and I had to smack these bolt heads hard to get them to move!

Watch out for the header bolts. Easy to strip the threads  in the cylinder head, apparently. I think the recommendation was 16 to 20 lbs torque.

I definitely had to adjust the fuel/air mix, which made it necessary to take off the carburetor brass plug in front of the air/fuel mixture screw. I don't think I'll have to rejet.

I like the sound too, but it is really loud, albeit not as much as most of the Harleys around here.

Waiting for the Mac pipe test from Lancer. That's the best looking set-up that I have seen so far.

ordered the 22" slash cut from delkevic and it should be here tomorrow.  so we should be able to compare looks/sound of the 18" vs the 22"

Title: Re: delkevic mufflers
Post by JLC on 01/25/17 at 06:28:17

I am sure it will be quieter... maybe I should say not as loud!  :)

Title: Re: delkevic mufflers
Post by twhitus on 01/27/17 at 08:15:20

so it came in yesterday, i was impressed with the quality of the wields etc.
it has 2 removable baffles, one large one and a smaller inner one in the front of the muffler. the net result is if i take out the large one its a fully open straight pipe, if i take out the little one its basically a baffled straight through muffler kinda like a cherry bomb glass pack.
went for a test ride with all the baffles in and it sounds REALLY good, its a little loud but only if i really get on it. when cruising at 45mph it has a nice thump. my butt dyno says it runs better, seems to have more grunt at higher rpm.
the installation took me a little while as there are NO instructions on the brackets etc but once i had the rear bracket wrong way around it all fit perfectly.
when i get a few minutes ill take a video and get it uploaded somehow.

Definitely not as loud as the shorter pipe, as expected.
