Title: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/05/17 at 13:25:59

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace the stock seat on my 2014 S40. Two reasons: the stock seat looks a bit 'meh', and I get a numb tailbone when riding for any length of time.

This is the main contender for me at the moment:

http://corbin.com/suzuki/ss40.shtml

I love the look of it and I have heard some good reports.

Has anyone had specific experience with this seat, especially the numbing factor of the stock seat?

I have looked around the forum and only found a few bits and pieces of information.

Any recommendations for other seats would also be appreciated  :)

To fix the numb tailbone takes $5 worth of Lowes rubber bumpers.

Look in the tech section for the "how to do it".

I was just reading up on the mods now.

I didn't realise it helped with the tailbone issue  :)

Cheers

Island,

I have been dealing with injury to my tailbone and have moved the rectifier and cut a portion of the seat pan away to make that portion of the seat softer. See cutout in picture.

Corbin seats are great and I have one on my Buell. The seat Corbin produces for the Savage/S40 pushes the driver front towards the tank and I don't think that is good for one's tailbone.

"The seat Corbin produces for the Savage/S40 pushes the driver front towards the tank"

I agree with that. Forward too much in my case. At 6ft tall, I was already a little scrunched with the stock seat (the seat lift mod helped). The Corbin seat upset my whole balance. I was pushed up to the tank, suddenly my comfortable stock buckhorn handlebars were too close to me and I was going to need to extend the footpegs forward. It was a nice seat, but I gave up on it and sold it here on the forum.

I can't tell you about the Savage seat but I have a Corbin on my Sportster and I love it. Just bring you and your bike to Hollister , CA , USA and they will custom make you a seat , special to fit your butt while you wait !
However it is by appointment only !

Thanks for the feedback guys. I thought it looked like the Corbin seat would push me forward. it is a good looking seat though! But I probably would have been disappointed if I ordered one.

I've been moving around in the saddle, trying different positions, while doing research. Moving forward a bit isn't all bad, but I'd rather move back a touch, and just relieve some pressure off the tailbone.

I remembered last night that I know a guy who does auto trimming. I got in touch with him today.  Will probably get the stock seat customised.  Shouldn't cost more than shipping a Corbin from the States  :)

I also found an old thread on here, from a guy who was making extensions for the forward controls (6" and 2"). I'd love to get a 2" set.  But not sure if he's still doing it.

The one piece seat isn't nearly as comfortable as the old two piece.

I really like the look of the old two piece seat too.

I did the seat lift mod on mine and it helped a lot.  I have lower back pain and tailbone pain if I put too much pressure on it.  The mod made me go from about half an hour to around an hour and a half before having to take a break. Hour and a half, you probably need to think about fuel anyway.

I tell you, If I knew what kind of foam to get, I'd raise it up 3 inches and level it with the pillion seat.  The extra padding would be nice and the additional seat height with the ability to move around would be wonderful. I don't want to sit in a hole, I want to sit on the seat.  Guess that comes from the old days of Honda CB seats.

I briefly sat up on the edge of the pillion seat, on a quiet stretch of road, to stretch my legs. It was surprisingly comfortable.

I may speak to my motor trimmer guy about replacement foam and reshaping. I'm sure we can do better than the stock seat.

The responses in this thread have got me thinking about the seat mod. But I'm gonna give the seat an overhaul anyway because I don't like anything about the one piece stock seat,, so I'll leave raising it for now and put up with it. I found if I move forward and inch it relieves the tailbone issue, but of course it bends the knees more. I don't have any really long rides planned for the next couple of weeks. So ai can work with that [ch9786]

I added a couple of inches of foam to the drivers portion of the seat when I had my seat reupholstered with a rolled and pleated design.

If you are having a tailbone issue the 2 piece seat hits at the same spot as single piece seat does. I had to relocate my rectifier to remove the portion of the seat pan that hit my tailbone.

Incidentally I am about 6' tall with a 30" inseam.

After the modification my tailbone was able to heal.

Kenny, that seat looks terrific! I especially like the upholstery.

I have the upper body of a 6' guy and the legs of a 5' guy ... I'm not kidding. Your seat mod looks like it would probably ease the problem I'm having, but I think I would have trouble when I stopped. I' m looking forward to kicking around ideas with the guy who is doing the mod for me. However he's on holiday until the 16th of January.

Incidentally, my rectifier is right under the center of the pillion seat.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I've been experimenting with my seating position on the last few rides and reckon I've worked out what changes I need to the seat. I think the Corbin seat is not what I need. I also checked out what the seat mod would be like with the front lifted. I don't reckon that will do it either.

Yesterday I rode an hour and a half to work (I work on different sites all over the place). I happened to have my work shorts on under my riding pants. This provided some surprising cushioning, especially when I pushed myself back a few inches so my tailbone was up on the edge of the pillion seat.

Everything just fell into place! It tilted me slightly forward, the forward controls were just far enough away, my weight was balanced between my backside, and my feet - it was like riding a different bike.

The trip involves about an hour on the highway at 100kmh (62mph). Normally after that trip my arms and hands are tired from hanging on, against the wind in my chest, and my legs are tired from the effort of keeping my feet planted on the pegs (I think that's a weight distribution thing). This time, it was just comfortable all the way, and no fatigue. Although, it was odd sitting perched back on the edge of the pillion seat, but so good it was worth it.

So the solution is just to be able to move a bit further back. I also like being able to move back and forward on the seat to change the position of my legs - further forward for intersections and around traffic, and further back for cruising on the highway.

So, I reckon I need to cut the pillion seat down by about an inch, raise the drivers seat foam as high as is practical, and smooth out the curve between them. That should do it. Very similar to a couple of mods that have been posted in this thread - so I know it can be done  :)

Thanks again guys.

Where you able to make the changes to the seat?  I have a similar issue and going the Corbin route seems risky considering the reviews on their customer service.  Once you have it, they don't want to talk to you anymore if it does not fit properly.

Now, that's the seat I would like.  I am doing my own changes to make the seat more comfortable.  The one in the pic would be perfect!

Hi Julianne

Hi Julianne,
I've begun experimenting by cutting down the stock seat so that all the experimenting is done before I go to the auto trimmer to get it done properly. I'm doing it in three stages:

Stage 1: cut the seat down then test it.  (This part is done).
Stage 2: pack the seat up again into a new shape. (Will do this soon)
Stage 3: take it all to an auto trimmer and have my new version done in good quality foam, and have it covered with something 'nice'.

I'm going to write up a tech document for the tech section of the forum when it's finished. But I'll post some photos here so you can see how it's coming along  :)

My aim was to simply allow myself to move back in the seat about an inch or so, and to relieve the pressure on my tailbone. So I wanted to smooth out the hump between the driver and pillion seat. To make a smooth transition, I took a layer off the pillion seat too.

My plan is to add that layer back on with a new single piece of foam that extends the full length of the seat, including over the new contour in the middle. This will have the effect of lifting the driver's seat a little too, because I did not remove anything from that. I think that would be a good thing.

This is the foam marked up ready to cut:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/22/17 at 19:35:51

This is it with the piece removed. I just used a serrated bread knife. You can see it looks a bit rough at first. And I cut a little deep just at the back of the driver's seat. I could maybe have done it little by little but wanted the option to stick it back on again if I messed it up  ;)

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/22/17 at 19:37:37

It's possible to tidy it up by laying the knife flat on it's side and gently moving it back and forth using the serrated edge to kind of scrape off the ridges. This is as good as I could get it:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/22/17 at 19:41:25

There are some significant limits to how much you can cut off because of the shape of the seat pan, which accommodates the rectifier and the wiring under the seat. I'm trying to achieve this without moving all that stuff ... if possible. So, at this stage of the project the pillion seat is pretty much unusable. However, the ridge at the back of the drivers seat is now far enough back to give the tailbone relief. But, if you push back onto that ridge, there is almost no foam there either, so it's pretty hard.

This shows how thin the foam is back there:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/22/17 at 19:44:23

This is it reinstalled. I think it looks good, at this stage, and it is a big improvement on the stock seat. My tailbone doesn't get sore when I ride and I can move back a little so I can lean forward into the wind when I get up to around 100 kph. Even with my tailbone back against the hard ridge it is still more comfortable than it was originally  :)

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/22/17 at 19:44:56

Here's another angle:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 01/22/17 at 19:58:31

I reckon it still needs some work though. I would like to reinstate the pillion seat to 'usable' status, and to lift the drivers seat a little, and even a little more at the front.

The red area on this photo is what I have in mind.

I have a couple of those cheap foam (rubber?) mats that you put on the ground under your sleeping bag. They're about half the thickness of what I removed from the pillion. So I'll cut those to size and experiment with multiple layers in different spots to mock something up. Then I'll recover it again and test ride it again. It should be quite ride-able when I'm done, but ultimately I'll use it all as a kind of template for the auto-trimmer guy to work from.

Island Road,

I am interested in any success that you have in reducing pressure on the tailbone. My tailbone is now about 95% healed and makes for much more enjoyable riding.

I had no success in softening the seat without moving the rectifier and cutting away the seat pan. I can certainly understand why most owners are reluctant to move the rectifier.

I have the drag bars with with the risers cut down to 2" and that did change the seating position. I am now considering going with Euro Bars or 1" Super Bars to further alter the seating position. I would also like to have a little more space on the handlebars for gadgets, such as a cup holder. My GPS uses up the little bit of space that is available on the Suzuki drag bars.

Good Luck with your project.

Thanks Kenny,

I noticed your post earlier about cutting the space out of the seat pan. I haven't ruled out moving the rectifier either, but will avoid that if I can  :)

I've also thought about lower risers for the handlebarsto to tilt me forward a little more. I find that is generally a little more comfortable.

As for gadgets, I have a Ryca mini tach arriving from the States tomorrow (I just received the email to say it is in Australia now). I plan to mount it under the handlebars, because I think it will stick up too much on top of the current setup. There's a tutorial on the forum to mount it underneath. I already have most of the bits and pieces to do it. If, later on, I go with lower risers, I'll relocate the tach to the top of the handlebars.

It's all good fun  ;D

I'll keep this thread posted with updates.

You are doing the right thing by making your motorbike fit you. You cannot really enjoy riding a bike that doesn't fit or is uncomfortable.

I know you didn't ask about "covers" but I got a sheepskin cover from http://alaskaleather.com/ ($50) last year and it is very comfy. Now it isn't going to solve all of your problems, but I had my seat foam professionally refoamed at the tailbone pressure points and added this sheepskin, and what a world of difference when you combine the two.

Well, I've done about ten hours of riding over the last the days, and the new shape on the seat is working out really well - no more sore tailbone and a little room to move. It makes the bike so much more enjoyable to ride.

I'm still going to experiment with padding it out a bit here and there, but I reckon the project is on track [ch9786]

I rode around Phillip Island the other day (on Google street view) .. nice ride.  ;)

It's cooled down a bit over the last week or so [ch9786]. We had a few days up around 37C (97F) a couple of weeks ago. Here in the south east of Aus, the temperature goes up and down alot over summer, but we usually get a couple of mini heat-waves where it hits 100F for a week or two.

The Island is nice to ride on, and has some good, quiet open roads for test-riding. However, it's mostly criss-crossed by straight roads, with some coastline to enjoy at the end of them (no actual coastal roads though). There are some really terrific roads just over the bridge and down the highway a bit - winding roads and mild hills that run through farm land. Also a couple of cafes here and there in the hills where your sure to meet other bikers who stop for a coffee on a sunny day.

Usually we have to run the gauntlet on the Bass Hwy to get to the good roads. The highway is just about always windy. Some days it has almost blown my open-faced helmet back off my head.

Just adding some photos to this thread to update anyone interested in the progress.

The project is advancing in the right direction. But I'm heading down a path that I think a lot of people end up on (based on my research here on the forum). That is, basically sculpting the foam to suit my butt  ;D

Stage one was to trim the edge off the stock seat.
Stage two was to add temporary foam and experiment with the shape.
Stage three will be to get new foam professionally shaped and fitted, based on my experimenting, and then having the seat recovered.

For what it's worth, I've learned three things:

1. This is a really individual thing. I don't think there will be a 'mod' (like the 'seat-lift mod') that will come out of this to suit everyone.
2. The stock seat pan has some significant limitations, therefore the final result will have some compromise involved.
3. This is a game of millimetres. Small changes make a BIG difference (that's a positive thing given the limitations involved)  :)

Having said all that, I have managed to relieve the pressure on the tailbone, and created some wriggle room on the seat. I will be making some minor adjustments and then going to see a professional to finish it off.

Here are some photos of what I've been up to.

I cut a couple of pieces of camping/sleeping mats to shape, and stuck them together to create a thicker layer under the drivers seat:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 02/08/17 at 03:18:53

I placed them on the seat and 'test-sat' then I began shaping the foam by scraping with the carving knife:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 02/08/17 at 03:21:50

I kept testing and shaping. The shaping became more specific. I shaped for the legs on the sides. I also got very specific in the tailbone area. I carved a dip for the tail bone leaving the left and right in that area a little higher. I also carved an incline from back to front of the drivers seat. It's difficult to make out in the photo but this one is the best I could get:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 02/08/17 at 03:23:30

I re-covered it with the original cover. It's a bit deceiving because the cover does not sit down into the dips. If I place my hand (or butt) on the seat, the cover conforms to the shape of the foam:

Title: Re: Anyone got a Corbin seat - Opinions?
Post by IslandRoad on 02/08/17 at 03:27:07

It's almost there. I need to take a little more of the centre of the driver's seat, and I reckon that will do it. I'm going to road test it for a bit longer before doing more because the underside of the seat pan is starting to look like a used pin cushion due to all the stapling and re-stapling.

As I said, my tailbone is happy. I'm looking forward to getting it done properly.

Now I'm starting to think about options for covering it  :)

When I did the backhoe and 4 wheeler seats I went to an upholstery shop and bought what they use for outdoor stuff, like boats. Over four years of weather and use and they look new.
It's not even very expensive. I got black.

Taking the seat and letting them cut a panel to cover the top, then sew a skirt to make the sides and tuck under the pan and secure it would probably give you a much better looking result. Once they sew the cover, you can put it on and save a chunk of change.
I used a good staple shooter and contact cement on the four wheeler.

I used mine all of last season, and found it to be much better than the stock seat. It easily doubled the ride time between needed stops for me. My SO says that the pillion section is pretty good too.  We're happy with it.  They ask for your weight, hgt., and you can add notes to your order. Each seat is custom padded for you.

Btw, I'm 6'2" and 250lbs. so I also raised the seat as well.  Raising the Corbin seat requires an ext. tab fabbed for your seat side bolts because the seat is a very tight fit to the tank/frame as is.  Raising it misaligns the bolt holes too much.
