Title: cleaning cylinder head
Post by jasonleung on 12/23/16 at 21:35:30

I just bought a 1995 savage and it looks like it has the famous plug leak, but i havent opened it up to see yet. Anyway since its been leaking for a while, old oil is all over the cylinder and cylinder head, any recommendations as of how to clean it up? especially around the spark plug?

Jason,

I like the spray cans of Gunk Original for cleaning something like oil all over the engine.

Gunk Original is readily available at WalMart and most auto supply places. Amazon has it but it is a lot more expensive than WalMart.

Jason,

Just spray the Gunk Original on the engine and let it sit for awhile and then hose it off. I blow the engine off with an air hose or the Shop Vac hose put in backwards and then take it for a spin around the block to get rid of the rest of the water.

Kenny, to use that stuff don't you need to warm up the engine first?

Kris,

I always wash my bikes with the engine cold.

I have been using Gunk for years and it may work better on a warm to hot engine, but I never let my engines get filthy. Gunk is satisfactory on a cold engine for my use.

It's probably better for the engine to wash it cold. I thought I read somewhere to heat the engine first though. It works better that way or something. Your experience with washing it cold works for me though. Thanks!

When cleaning a gunked up engine cold is better, as it allows the cleaner to stay on the surface and not evaporate.  A good soaking with some diesel fuel or kerosene or mineral spirits on the really caked on junk never hurts, and a small brush to work the solvent in helps as well.  Then use the cleaner to get the oil/dirt/solvent off.....and if you have a way to spray hot water that helps as well.
