Yes indeed.....

I wish everyone around our ever shrinking globe health, happiness, and life fulfillment, no matter race, belief, or kind of bike you ride!

We all share the commonality of love.....
It is the constant thread that will never break, no matter how hard its pulled....
A thread of gold, I wish to all, upon this wonderful time of year!

Mike,

Merry Christmas.

Make mine with grilled onions & Whiz and I'll take a Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer to wash it down.

Kenny, you've got my mouth watering! Can't find Birch Beer down south. Root Beer is as close as it comes. However, there is 1 place down the road that's run by Mennonites. They've got an off brand birch beer. It's not great.

Kris,

There is no Birch Beer in Texas either.

If I ever get back east again Pat's "King OF Steaks" will be one of my first stops. I make steak sandwiches here but we don't have the quality of meat that they have in Philadelphia.
I have to bake my own rolls too.

I have a vague memory of root beer from my younger days, but had never heard of birch beer.

But then... in Italy we have "Chinotto" (prn. kee-notto") which is NOT a Cocal Cola spinoff but the carbonated spinoff of an ancient drink.

You could call it "Myrtle Beer"  8-)

Kris,

When we first moved to North Texas we dined in a really fine restaurant in Plano. Since we had never been there before the waiter introduced us to the owner. I mentioned that I had a really great porterhouse steak and I was anxious to get settled in and start enjoying the Texas beef.

The owner smiled and told me that my particular steak came from Omaha. They had 2 beef suppliers, one in Omaha and one in Kansas City. The reason being, both places had really terrible winters and they wanted to make sure they had quality beef all year around. He explained that the local beef suffered from the hot climate.  All of the beef for local consumption was inspected by USDA, but was not graded so the beef is sold as Select rather than Choice or Prime.

The Philadelphia area has the same beef  that you get in new York City. A lot of the beef is fattened on Mennonite and Amish farms in small herds of 30 or 40 steers at a time. And a  substantial amount of the beef is grain fed and comes from the western states.

I don't care for Texas food in general and the meat in particular.

So that is why I can't find a good prime rib down here in the south! The best I ever have had is a place called "Kelly's" in Quincy Illinois. Those guys sure know how to do it up.

Rider,

The beef in around Chicago is some of the best in the nation.

The picture below is an example of the best affordable rib roast that I can find in North Texas.

If only Philly had the same quality of bread they have in NYC, that would be a treat. Anytime I go to the rotten apple to visit friends or family I make sure to devour as much pizza, bagels, rolls, subs and pastries as I can because once I get back here its back to gritty old, cruddy philthy bread. The bread in NYC is special due to the mineral content of their mountain spring tap water piped in from way upstate.

Here we drink the Schukill River Punch mmmmmm Treated sewage water + chlorine = Schuylkill Punch  :P

This article basically says bread made in Philly stinks  ;)

Mike,

The only way I can get a decent bagel in Texas is for me to make them...

I do like New York City....The further away that you get from The Big Apple the worse the food gets.

I agree Kenny
NYC has some really good food! The quality and quantity of food served at restaurants there beats the heck out of most places in my town. And here's the surprise - it's less money there too!
I honestly don't know what we are getting for the money charged in Philly's restaurants anymore. the service is lousy everywhere and the food is marginal at best. If I go out to eat anymore I do it out in the burbs, quality is better outside the city.

I wouldn't know where to begin making my own bagels. Sounds like a labor of love.

Mike,

Making bagels is a lot of work.
