Title: Good deals on PC, Laptop, Chromebooks
Post by Oldfeller on 12/19/16 at 00:55:34

Watch for the end of year deals on existing Intel based stocks of laptops, chromebooks and the like.

There is a new wave of laptop capable ARM processors coming from Qualcomm and others ......  and a new wave of improved super fast HUGE main storage memory which will make the existing INTEL warehoused stuff seem much less desirable by late spring of 2017.

Microsoft is also opening up all of the existing Windows world to ARM processors which makes another major jet stream shift which will have an effect on the "value and goodness" of the existing warehoused stuff.

AMD is coming back strong (at 25% less processor cost compared to Intel) which will once again swing the jet stream yet again as better processors, better graphics at 25% LESS COST means the existing Intel based warehouse stocks need to get moved ASAP.

Linux Mint 18.1 became available this morning, so I did an exercise in comparing "upgrade speed".

Same machine took over 20 minutes just to light up the Win 10 sub-system, because I hadn't used it in 6 months so it had to self-upgrade/update the various bits & pieces through the chain of updates, one at a time.   This was done according to MS's very best most current "behind the scenes" update system, none of which was actually out of sight or out of mind to me as I saw the jugging dots 5 different times and had to reboot 3 times upon Win10's repeated requests as each update had to take effect before the next could be installed.

Whole thing took over 20 minutes and I left to get coffee and use the bathroom during the Mickysoft intermission periods.   This was JUST TO BOOT IT over to the Win10 partition, no real upgrading was advertised nor was done according to MickeySoft.

..... in contrast .....

I did the Mint 18.1 major upgrade in 8 minutes 5 seconds, which INCLUDED downloading, unpacking, installing and verifying ALL THE SOFTWARES -- with ONE (1) REBOOT requested at the end of the process.   No disc burning was required as upgrades all come over the web on Linux Mint now.

:P    Mickey, you still suck no matter what you say about yourself ......

Papa Bear, what drove you away from Microsoft?   Just curious as many here are still on it and cannot envision ever leaving.

:-/

They say they "need" it  ...... ??

Then there are some of us who wouldn't know what to do to get away from windows or what to do if we did  ;D
I'm still on Vista !  ::)

This is a low end Acer all-in-one that can be bought for $400 or deluxe'd out at $700.   It comes with a mouse and keyboard that are cordless.   Very clean, no cables anywhere, can work off of wifi directly for the complete "no cables anywhere" look.

This represents what a PC can look like in 2017.

This represents the ongoing saga of Raspberry Pi getting good enough to be a PC.  The newest Pi have the guts of a low end cell phone and it IS GOOD ENOUGH to be a low end PC.   Kiddies bringing their school Pi's home are hooking them up to external monitor and keyboard and going to town.

This, for $35 ......

Now, there is also an image to let this same software run on ANY Wintel machine, no matter how old or creaky it might be.

It can live boot off of installed media and then live off your jump drive or a CD keeping all its files and data right there so it does not interfere with anything.

The k1-3 grandkids are gonna fix Grandma up with something that poor ol' non-tech grandma can understand, something that they can help her with over the phone.

And I bet Grandma will jest love it ..... she can talk with the kids over something they are doing together.   Grandma likes that, a lot.

I met someone that said their school was using them for instruction on computer programming.  He said they were extremely underpowered.
