Title: Start up problems Post by Innit.ox.uk on 12/15/16 at 12:47:09 Hi all I'm new here n dunno if I'm on rite place to ask question.ain't too technical minded innit.. My little savage has been difficult starting..had battery tested..all good..gave battery a boost bike started first time..after 3rd day takes couple of times to start..the neutral lite gose out n it like the starter stalls befor it fires up..is it worth splashing out on a gel battery as advised by non single cylinder so called bike mechs n if so any recs, could it be starter motor,plug..or just me?? I ain't a mechanic just trial n error so simple solutions plese :) |
Title: Re: Start up problems Post by verslagen1 on 12/15/16 at 13:19:47 Bike won't start if the bat gets below 10v. If the starter stalled, it's well below 10v. a volt meter is a handy tool. but you should check the cables for good connections and check the ground connection to the motor. |
Title: Re: Start up problems Post by Steve H on 12/16/16 at 04:08:07 Hey Vers, the key here might be 'the neutral lite gose out n it like the starter stalls befor it fires up". If there's a neutral switch issue or wiring issue, it's gotta cause starting problems, right? |

A battery that is weak (or a less than ideal ground wire, etc.) can cause the light to go out....or dim.....when the starter is stealing all the amperage the battery can provide. If the bike starts immediately after the battery is boosted - but then has problems 3 days later....that would indicate the battery is not holding a full charge. How old is the battery? |
Title: Re: Start up problems Post by Innit.ox.uk on 12/18/16 at 12:56:20 The battery is bout 16mnths old..wen it got tested it said it had 12v..were is the earth wire..is it the one wot goes to the top of starter wiv rubber cap over it..soz but like I said I'm lernin thru trial n error innit..wot bout these gel battery's is it werth me spending out..in england they cost bout £50 |

Title: Re: Start up problems Post by sauvage on 12/18/16 at 21:40:35 I'd go for an AGM rather than a GEL, if it was a flooded battery, i.e. one that needs to be topped up with distilled water, and it was allowed to dry out, that will kill the battery. AGM is best for the Savage because it's a pain to get the battery out to check it regularly. |

A battery that reads 12 Volts when tested....only has 25% of a full charge. (It is also useful to measure the voltage that the battery has when it is running the starter). Here is a link to a good battery article. https://www.batterystuff.com/kb/articles/battery-articles/battery-basics.html |
