Title: Savage in vintage racing? Post by Armen on 12/11/16 at 19:49:34 Since these bikes have been around for 30 years, they must be legal to race in somebody's vintage race series. Anyone know of a Savage based vintage racer? Who/what/when/where? thanks, -Armen |

Post by MMRanch on 12/11/16 at 22:20:06 Armen I've pass a lot of Dressers of every kind on "Dragon-Type-Roads" , and even a few Sport-Bikes. ;) I think the place the LS-650's shines is in the twistiest mountain roads. And the fact that it can do almost anything. I could picture a "stripped-down" version being a flat-track bike on dirt. |

On one (1) pass from overlook to Dragon Lodge I passed 8-10 items (one was a panel truck which was hard). Exceptions exist: A certain white Honda flat four eats all our arses every time we meet up with him (he's a local). ANY WELL RIDDEN modern 600cc crotch rocket can make you seem like you are sitting still. Bikes that really don't like being eaten by a Savage = Triumphs and Ducatis They pout afterwards ..... Place where the Savage suffers some ..... over 75 mph on the Interstates. |

Post by Ruttly on 12/12/16 at 12:30:47 Even though you can get some H/P out of these engines they are much too heavy for a dirt tracker where power to weight rules/wins. But as a vintage road racer I think it would have some consistent lap times due too its thumpability! It would be fun to try but I wouldn't expect to win and isn't that the point of racing. My tracker weighs in at 313 lbs but it's built for me to abuse it , a road racer version would have to loose 13 to 20 lbs , it can be done if you drill enough holes Armen !!! ;D ;D ;D |

Post by Dave on 12/12/16 at 12:55:20 What kind of rules apply to "vintage racing" bikes" A 650 single most likely is not going to have any kind of a chance against the bikes that would be in the same class - would that be bikes with up to 750cc engines? With any number of cylinders? Really....what chance would we have against a 550 or 750 Honda 4 cylinder that is race prepped? The Savage engine and chassis is not well suited to racing - except in a class that is limited to entry level cruisers.....and then we could be very competitive! |

Post by Ruttly on 12/12/16 at 19:39:57 Most vintage road racing is pre 1968 ,some up to 1972 So if you want to race it you'll have to race with the big boys It would still be a ton of fun and if you lucky you could seriously piss off some other racers ! I know I wouldn't come in last place , I would rather crash and DNF before that happened ! Tires and strip it down I can get it under 300 lbs. Racing slicks would look bad azz on my tracker , then I could really push the chicken strip right up to the edge ! :o |
