Is this an interference motor or no?

Did you miss a shift, break the cam chain, or ????
Symptoms?
A leak down test will answer the question pretty quickly.

Yes, it is an interference engine - big time!

Did you have a can chain tensioner let go?

I think I screwed up setting the timing after changing the head gasket. Won't start, turning slowly while cranking. Gonna tear back open in a few days. Been workin on it for a while now, need a break, and I'm afraid to look. :'(

It wouldn't turn slowly. It would spin, clank, stop.
Don't go
Ripping into it.
Study the valve timing and the timing mark on the crank.
Check the battery voltage.
Pull the plug and see how spinning the motor feels with a socket. Go slow. Feel.

Got a car battery you can jump it off of? Don't run the car's engine at the same time. The car's alternator will fry the bike's electrical system.

Not until he has checked How the engine feels.
Study it, don't go seeing how hard you can spin it.

Thanks guys.
It's a pretty new battery and I had it hooked to a tender so I know the battery is fine.
I think Justin's input is how I'll proceed.
At this point, if I did screw up getting the cam in, I'm hoping to be able to lift the head cover enough to get at the chain sprocket without tipping the engine forward to remove it completely, pull the tensioner off and right my wrong.
Any thoughts?

Gently SEE if it will go to TDC.
Plug out, socket, end wrench, whatever, on the crank.
Feel the engine. If you are working at it with the plug out, stop.

It Should just spin on over from TDC compression and exhaust. I use a breaker bar because the ratchet just lets it spin. You should Hope it spins the ratchet.
Get it to TDC if it's spinning right, and study the valves.

Make sure your decompression cable is hooked up right.

And make sure your rotating it the same direction the wheels turn.

If it's turning slow, that's the battery.
And check your ground, if it's loose or dirty, could slow things down.
A lot a people have gotten a new bad battery too, don't summarily assume it's good cause it's new.

OR... did you have the stator cover off?
could be you've put the washers back on incorrectly.

Did you replace or ? the clutch ?  I mis-installed the clutch and caused the engine to drag when I tried to start it.... :-[

Update...
So as it turned out it was a valve clearance adjustment that was needed. Took care of that (not easy) and it fired right up. The reason I say not easy is because I was using a "cluster" type feeler gauge set. If I woulda had just a .004" gauge that was longer, it woulda been a lot easier. I did see a comment somewhere on this site about bending the feeler gauge into a Z shape, but since this was a borrowed set that really wasn't an option.

Thanks everyone for your input!
:)

Take the cluster apart. Remove the blade you want.
I don't know how you did it.. it's tough enough with just one blade.
