Title: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by sauvage on 12/05/16 at 17:13:13 I went to check the header bolts and they seemed OK, I didn't back them off just gave it a small amount of torque as I didn't want to over tighten. But then I remembered how difficult it was to get the bolts out of my gs500 when the time came... so I was wondering if it's OK to remove the exhaust bolts one at a time and apply some anti seize on the bolts and re torque to spec. By OK I mean is this going to damage the crush washer. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by hotrod on 12/05/16 at 19:17:03 I have had that washer on and off many times with no problems. Reverse it so it can re- shape itself better. In a perfect world, you would replace it. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by verslagen1 on 12/05/16 at 20:16:55 Exhaust bolts shouldn't be hard at all. If they are, trouble's brewing. There's only 2 bolts so I would take'm out at the same time. lube'm up good and put them back in. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/05/16 at 21:20:22 I trust my hand over a torque wrench. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by youzguyz on 12/06/16 at 00:47:13 The exhaust header bolts are one of the few places I use anti-sieze. I would much rather have to tighten it up once in a while than try to get a busted bolt out. Steel bolt going into aluminum head and subject to high heat. Bad mojo combination. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by Dave on 12/06/16 at 01:36:46 IF your bike is stored outside, ridden in wet weather, or you live in a humid climate......it is a good idea to take these bolts out occasionally and apply some fresh anti-sieze to them. Snug them up with a 1/4" ratchet using one hand.....don't over tighten them. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by Kenny G on 12/06/16 at 06:26:17 Dave, Has anyone on here calculated the length we need for studs to replace the bolts? The next time I have my exhaust off I would like to replace the bolt with studs. Kenny G :-/ |

When I screw the bolts all the way in, 17mm goes into the head. Add to that the width of the exaust pipe clamp, how much you need to put a nut (optional washers) in place, and wiggle room. |

Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by Rodger on 12/06/16 at 07:54:15 Since it's 11° out this morning here in Colorado, methinks anti-seizing the exhaust bolts in the semi-heated garage would be a MUCH better idea than braving the cold. Of course, the cat (a.k.a. "Garage Troll") will be supervising. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by sauvage on 12/06/16 at 14:27:54 @Dave, Ok, this was not as bad as I thought, I expected the header pipe to want to fall off after removing the bracket that holds it on, but it doesn't. And the bracket has a completely flat surface that mates with the cylinder head. Never seen that before. |

The flat surface of the bracket should not be touching the cylinder head....there should be some clearance - as the gasket between the header and cylinder head should be what is touching....not the body of the bracket. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by Kris01 on 12/06/16 at 19:16:22 I thought I would mention to remove the bolts only when they are cool. Obviously so you won't burn yourself but also because, uhh... I don't know. 'Cuz I was told not to try and remove them when the metal is hot. It supposedly might cause galling or something. |
Title: Re: Preemptive header nut maintenance Post by sauvage on 12/07/16 at 23:15:13 @Dave, OK I see now where the gasket is, I had to have a look at the parts fiche. Yes there is a gap. thx. |
