Title: Gas Tank Rattle
Post by wordet11 on 11/20/16 at 05:30:29

Hey guys, sorry if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I have a 2002 Savage with a horribly annoying rattle that comes from the gas tank at any speed. It is not the infamous speedometer rattle, I fixed that. With the tank pulled off the bike and the speedometer removed, I can shake the tank and still get the rattle. It's something inside the tank. BUT, it's not just a loose piece of something floating around. It sounds like some small piece on a mechanism moving back and forth that is attached to the inside of the tank. Any ideas on what this is? Thanks!

Nothing missing from the cap?
Go fishing with a magnet?
Drain , remove, invert, shake.

There is nothing inside of the tank except the part of the petcock that sticks up inside the tank.
Or it could be the cap that is rattling.  At least that is easy to check.

Removed and cleaned the cap. Still rattling with the cap off. I've flipped the tank every which way to try and get it out. It's just seems like it's attached to the inside. It's also on the left side toward the front so I can't see it.

It could be a petcock screen that came loose.

Just replaced the stock petcock with a Raptor.

I take it the screen was attached to the original petcock?  Was it the original petcock that you took out?  Just thinking of what might be in there.

You could Red Kote the tank and forget about it.

Yup, it was the original petcock. Screen was still attached. No idea what could be in there.

most of the seams are welded from the outside.  that means there's a pinch point that something could be dropped into and be caught.

or it could be something that was welded in like a bit of welding wire that's about to break off.

Do you fill the tank and the rattle is gone for a bit?
that would tell me the piece is towards the top.
Or only rattles when nearly empty... towards the bottom.

Not really important, just another clue but would make the next step easier.

I'd remove the tank (and buy another one) put a pound of something not really abrasive (unless you got rust), light enough not to dent, but something that may work that piece loose.  Somewhere between walnut shells and 1/2" nuts.  Then work it like you're removing the rust in the tank.

Try a small mirror on a stick (or dental mirror) with a torch shining down onto the mirror, or a key ring torch inside the tank. I picked up one of those drain inspection cameras with inbuilt light that plug into your computer USB ($20) which has been great for this sort of problem.

Wordet,

Do you know a gunsmith with a bore scope?

Just another example of a similar people separated by a common language. In the US a torch is usually a flame. Don't want to look into a fuel tank, wet or dry, with a torch :)

you might look at the rear mount to make sure it isn't cracked /broken,it wouldn't be the first time.If you have the tank off check the upper motor mounts that run from the head to the frame they may be loose.

You need a plastic magnet

Gary, I was going to say the same thing! A little misinterpretation could be a hazardous thing!  ;D

What is this speedo rattle you guys are talking about and what is the fix?

Mine will "rattle" under the tank sometimes when I hit a bump and I can't zero in on the loose component.
TIA

Bob

Thanks for the replies fellas. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet. However, it makes the noise regardless of whether or not the tank is full or empty. I'm going to try and get a mirror or something to try and get a look at the inside.

Whatever the piece is, it has a bit of weight to it. Like a 1/4" nut or something.

This makes me think it's below the tank. If there was something like a nut in the tank it's sound would be dampened by the fuel.

Can't wait to hear (pun) what it is.

As soon as I can make it out to the garage where the bike is for the winter, I'll let you guys know what I find out.

It might even be the blinker for your turn signals ,it could have vibrated out of the rubber holder and be hanging down hitting the tank.

Something very similar happened with my bike, and all it ended up being was a small screw that wasn't suppose to be there
