A Rebel 500 could be a keeper...one that doesn't have the power and highway speed restrictions the little 250 Rebel has.

Kawasaki has the Vulcan S, and now Honda has the 500 Rebel.

How will Suzuki and Yamaha respond?

Reminds me of the old Vulcan 500 LTD.  Hopefully Honda will keep the pricing closer to the CB500, undercutting the Vulcan S by a wide margin.

I think I could get interested in that 500.  After a recent experience locking up both wheels (not on a Savage) I would want the optional ABS brakes.  The 500 would likely do a good job of meeting that criteria list that Oldfeller posted a week or two ago.  Not too heavy, low seat, probably decent power and torque but it does have a chain drive.

I like the Idea of the 500 but it's really more a bobber than anything else, I think these companies need to thing of a bike design that works for many uses. Why not build the bike with a rack on the back to except luggage for solo trips and a passenger seat that could mount to it to take your honey for a ride .I'm waiting for a bike with a broader appeal.

Honda probably has all those as add on accessories.  How much extra could they ding you for? :o  They also build a sportbike, a naked, and an adventure bike around that same powertrain.

I think their design departments are all trying to appeal to the millenials or hipsters or whatever.  It is a demographic that is not buying many bikes and they figure us old timers won't be buying bikes much longer.

I agree with batman, I think they should get back to the concept of all purpose bikes.  They say that most bikes are bought by people over 50 so they might as well build to that.

The Rebel has an add-on passenger seat that looks VERY comfortable.

/facetiousness  ;D

60 lbs lighter than a Vulcan 500, 70 lbs lighter than a Vulcan S.  408 lbs is right in my ballpark, but I already have 2 S40's and a beat-up shadow 600.
Curious to know the HP. 8-)
ps: no other OEM has copied the Kawi adjustable seat/pegs. wondering...

:( :( :(

Chain where the belt should be ... What on earth were they thinking ...  :( :( :(

and not air cooled to boot !!!   :( :( :(

They just don't understand the market very well ...   Hello Honda  ...   a modern version of the old 350 / 360   ...  :) :) :)

Its not about HP .   ,   think simple-sty , good millage , and a REAL 500 version of a Rebel

I got excited at the title ... Thanks for the Rush  Zip-Man !  :)

they also cut the wheel size to 16" from 17" .???
Same size wheels at both ends gives it a different look than most cruisers. Starting to like it. 8-)

The days of air cooled street bikes are gone.  In order to get the performance that we have come to expect, and meet the more stringent pollution standards - the engine has to be water controlled to get rid of of the heat.  (This happened to cars many years ago and is why both VW and Porsche had to go to water cooling).

I like the look of it; sure wish Suzuki would update the LS650 to something similar or to a standard like it was years back.

I agree, Lancer. The new styling looks pretty good. I didn't care too much for the old Rebel style.

I like the idea of a 250 Rebel replica but with TWICE the Tork !  :)

maybe a touch bigger frame ??

Nope. Honda misses the boat again. This won't last any longer than the Ascot did. Now that CB223S, picture of which Papa Bear posted in another thread, is the right direction. Punch that out to 350 or 400, add a kick start and tach. Currently only sold in Japan, it will probably never make it to our shores. So we're still stuck with cruisers, crotch rockets, and dirt devils. Finis.

I'm with HAPPYDAN on this one.  I hate the gas tank for starters.

This isn't going to help either: Same engine as the new 300 Rebel. I expect that Honda has the  issue  fixed by now but this would still make me think twice.

http://www.cyclevin.com/wp-content/uploads/RCRIT-16V528-0598.pdf

The earlier model  year 500 twins that used the same motor as the new 500 Rebel needed a valve check and possible adjustment at the 600 mile service. 8 shim and bucket valves.  A bunch of folks got a nasty surprise when they rode their new bike home and read the owner's manual. That's unacceptable IMO.  First check on the 300 Ninja isn't till 7500 miles I believe, and the new  little yamaha twin ( R3) doesn't need to be looked at till 26500.  Honda may have backed away from that by now. I don't know. I'd sure check if I was thinking about buying one though.

Got schooled by the local Honda dealer. It seems, in the great Honda motorcycle universe, we here Americans are kind of an asteroid - small and insignificant. Estimates for USA sales are less than 5% of Honda's worldwide market for motorcycles, so it's just not cost effective to market small and mid-sized street bikes here. I guess we have to take what they send us and like it or lump it. :P
