Title: Rear axle question
Post by Redryder652 on 10/28/16 at 12:14:38

I may be getting a new pipe and it blocks the axle bolt from coming out, making me have to take the pipe off to change a tire. Can the rear axle be flipped around to eliminate this problem? Does the axle have to be put in a certain way? I understand that the spacers can't be flipped, but how about the axle?

I can't think of any reason that you couldn't do that.

That's the way I have it, axle going in on the left side.
Due to longer shocks, I have to sit on it to get access to the nut.

If I remember, I flipped mine without any consequences.

Having taken mine off several times, I can't think of a reason why not so long as the spacers go back in the same way.

Sure, there is probably some science behind the nut being on a certain side so if the axle grabs it'll spin the nut tighter, but the S40 isn't a racing bike that warrants that kind of worry.  If you were worried about that, then having the nut on the left would be the correct placement to make this a non-issue.

So...everyone run out and swap your rear axle bolts around, quickly!!!  :o :o :o

Changing the axle around is no problem.  I have a longer one on my reversed to hold up my fender supports.  3 years no problem.

If it loosens up, the nut spins with the axle.
At least it does every time I just turn the nut.

I flipped my axle right away. Always set up my bikes with the axle nut on the right to make chain or belt adjustments easier.
On mine with the long RYCA muffler, the axle nut and the axle wanted to trench a hole in the muffler. I called the axle moyle and trimmed a bit off the end of the axle. Then I bought 2 stainless jam nuts so that they could slip onto the axle one a time without having to move the muffler much. With the 2 jam nuts tightened against each other, there is no need for a lock nut or a cotter pin.

Can I just park my bike facing the opposite direction? :-/
