Title: Rear disc brake and mag wheels
Post by Honda-redrider on 10/27/16 at 20:59:06

I've seen the topic of rear disc brakes come up several times so I thought I'd broach it on a savage that recent picked up.  I've built a couple cafes with an ls650 in the past and always kept the wire wheels.  Trying something different this time, so far so good.

Once I figure out how to upload photos I'll post some.

I have been looking at the peg mounts on my Ninja 250, and the right one has the peg, pedal and master cylinder all mounted on the same bracket....and the left one has the shift pedal built into it.  These might be a good way to get the pegs, pedals and master cylinder mounted to the Savage frame.

I'm actually using a EX650 ninja rear wheel which is all mounted up and appears to be positioned centered in the fame and within a .10" inline with the sprockets.  I haven't visited the rear sets yet though I have a couple sets of the Loaded Gun's which are nice.  The front will be a ZX10R wheel with single 320mm rotor and hopefully radial mounted rotor.

Does anyone know of a shop that can machine a custom triple clamp, top and bottom?

You draw it up, spec everything out, pinch bolt locations, bolt size, thread pitch, depths, and any machine Can build it...
Can You afford it is the question.
A shop that Does that work regularly would be great to find..

I have seen a couple shops that advertise CNC yokes to order.

I still haven't found the fellow that I was looking for......I might look through some old emails and find it (maybe Hillary has it on her private server).

Haha!  Now that's funny!  I'll ask the FBI then!

Thanks for the info guys!  I'll give those two links a look, and no I probably can't afford it, but I want it!  I would probably be better off throwing a different fork on it but I'd like to keep as much of the chassis original as possible.  Mainly because if I taken it down it would be nice to throw a stock savage/s40 part back on it.

I bought the top clamp that RYCA makes.  It makes it possible to drop the fork legs to lower the front end.  It took quite a bit of time to sand and polish out the cutter marks in the corners - but it looks nice now.  (Hopefully they have improved their machining methods, I bought one of their early ones).

Gary_in_NJ modified a bottom clamp to use on top to get the ability to adjust the fork tubes up/down.

The need for a custom triples isn't to drop the forks, I'll make spacers similar to the ryca spacers.  The reason I need a custom triple is because I need the fork spacing to be approx .5" wider than stock for the fork to accept the mag wheel I'm using.  Thanks for the advice.

You might check and see what the VS800 Intruder yokes would work.  A few member have used that front end on the bike and it is wider than the stock Savage - but I don't know if the fork legs are the same diameter tubes.

VS800 fork tubes are 39mm

I've looked at a ton of yokes but I haven't looked at that one.  However if it uses 39mm fork tubes then it won't work, savage is 38... odd ball size of course so I can't find anything.

I have the front end pretty much all to the correct spec for clearance and spacers turned out, just need the top and bottom yokes to button everything up.

I'm thinking about building a custom swing arm to.  Still on the fence about that but may eventually use the swinger that I fabbed up in the pic to build a rectangular swinger.

Here's a database that I've snagged from... I wish I could remember.

wheel, axle, stem bearings, and fork diameters for many years and models.

should help you in your search.

Are you going to move left shock mounts in or leave it sticking out ? Did mine when I did chain conversion it looks so much better , also made a chain tensioner.

Thanks for the info.  Am I looking at it wrong? All I see is the tire size, cc, and battery size.  Thanks,
james

Yes I'll be relocating the shocks all together once I add a top rail and hoop to the frame.  I agree it will look better and I think I'll end up building a completely custom rectangle tube swing arm.

Yeah while doing 1st mock up I saw how far that left shock stuck out. Took it back apart, cut it all off, made a new lower mount and shortened the upper mount. Looks a ton better, after powder coating looks even better.
Was worth the extra work.

I honestly never noticed the difference until I tore the bike apart and then it was very apparent.  I fabbed up a swing arm and turned out spacers to make the ninja wheel fit on the rear but I think I want to build a custom swinger with 1"x2" tubing and nice ends and shock mounts.
