Title: Melted wax loosens nuts and bolts?
Post by engineer on 10/27/16 at 11:56:42

I thought I had heard of every trick for loosening stuck threaded fasteners but here is one that is new to me and I thought I would share it in case some of you hadn't heard of it either.  Could be that it is just the heat loosening it and then the paraffin supplies some lubrication.  Here are some videos.

Very cool idea! I'll try to remember that next time I have a stubborn bolt.

Here is another video showing a guy removing a broken steel stud from cast aluminum.  Might have helped cheapnewbi

I think it is just the heat doing the loosening. The difference in the expansion between the two materials probably does the trick.  I've seen lots of millwrights and riggers heat frozen studs to red hot temperatures and then back them out.  The wax probably just makes it easier to back out once it has broken free.
