Title: Bad stator?
Post by Jessechop on 10/21/16 at 17:42:58

While going over my recently purchased 01 I noticed something wrong.

Bike sitting 12.3v

Running at idle 13.45v

Just off idle 13.6v

at higher rpms 12.9-13v

So  I ran a stator test. The highest  I can get any reading is 80v and thats really cranking on the RPM's

The service manual states a minimum of 100v per terminal on the stator......

I did check all connections and grounds. Any other ideas before  I change out the stator?

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I'd point at the voltage regulator. Or crumby connections.
Seems to throttle back a bit much.

Batman is correct
Check your connections, apply some dielectric grease to connectors
Take it for a good ride then check charge and static voltages
I wouldn't mess with it if it's charging

Service manual states 14-15.5v at 5000 rpms. I am no where near that. I have checked and pined out all connections.

Manual also states 100v min at each of the stator terminals which I am not getting.

Sounds like maybe I am getting some wrong info from my manual. I will look for another

check the resistance from term to term,  should be 1 to 2 ohms.
then check to ground, should be infinite.

Verslagen ,has the ticket! If the ohms read ok and none of the three legs go to ground your ok ,all of the voltages you recorded were above the battery voltage of 12.3 ,which also sounds good for a healthy battery. The ac voltage of 80 seems a bit low ,but if there is no large difference between the three legs that would seem ok also.

1) 12.3 is not bad. 12.6 is for a new battery, by the time it reads 12.1 0r lower it is on it's way out.
2) Running - should be 13.2 to 13.8 volts. 13.45 is fine.
3)good
4) again, good
Clean all connections, apply dielectric grease, and ride before it gets too cold. :)

As long as your AC voltage is well above charge voltage, it shouldn't be a problem.  Looks like your charging voltage is high enough to charge.  I believe Clymer's says 14.5 to 15v at 5k rpm too.
Check the wires from the stator where they run under the belt. There have been instances of them being cut by the belt and either being open or grounding out.

Do the checks Verslagen gave you.  When my stator died, voltages all measured fine.  It just didn't produce enough wattage to run and charge at the same time and the battery slowly went dead.  All of my lead to lead measurements were around 2 ohms but, I measured 1.x ohms to ground on each lead.  If you have a short to ground it's bringing your charging voltage down and grounding out about half the wattage as well.

If everything with the measurements checks out, you might have a regulator/rectifier problem if it's still not charging. You can check the diodes in the rectifier but the regulator part can really only be tested by swapping out with a known good one.

Good luck with it.  Charging issues can be frustrating. If it's running and charging well, I wouldn't worry about it just because the voltages are a little out of spec. Anything above 12.6v (the battery is actually a 12.6v battery) will charge if you have enough wattage to supply the bike and have some left over to put into the battery.

If the battery isn't going dead (If you are riding it at least 2 times a week) leave it alone and save money.  ::)

Thanks for all of the insight and tips.

I bought the bike non running as a winter project. I have ha the bike running and playing around the house with it. Simply making a to-do list for the winter.

Still undecided on the direction I am going to take with the bike

As long as you're getting a consistently higher voltage with the engine running,... I wouldn't worry about it...

When my stator went bad I was getting a voltage drop...
When the battery is fully charged, the regulator meters the voltage output so as not to over-charge.
