No sure if this will help much.....you already know about the deer where you live and ride.

He may have zigged  when he should have zagged.
Front tire is not quite planted, and the deer isn't all the way against him yet. The next few milliseconds will be ugly.
I hope that's a low speed collision.

The other day, almost home, and a red tail hawk swoops low, just above and in front, I was getting a good look at the shape and colors, how it used its tail, and then the blasted thing does a quick turn, drops a few feet and I had to duck.. why, ill never know,
I hope if I'm ever about to get a body check from a deer I have time to just let go and roll off... I mean, I know I'm Getting off,, why wait?
Why get knocked off?

I think he took that lesson of 'steer into threat, it'll be gone when you get there' a little too seriously.

Helmet to right shoulder , he has contacted low flying object, leaned over that far , front tire in air , on knobs , no way did he save that , that's a crash for sure !

I had the exact same experience last Saturday (different bird). There were 4 eagles (not sure, they weren't vultures and they were waaay bigger than hawks) feeding on some roadkill. As I got closer, 3 of them (the smart ones) flew off. Number 4 decided to fly 5' off the ground and right off my handlebars. We "rode" together for 20 seconds or so. It was a beautiful bird!
