Title: What other bikes have you owned / ridden
Post by BSTON on 10/10/16 at 06:49:58

I think I'm going to be picking up a second bike some time this week. The little Ryca café just isn't cutting it for my interstate commute. As of right now the leading contender is the 2016 Kawasaki Ninja 650. The local dealers have them marked down to $5300 vs an MSRP of $7200. I'm assuming that's because of the time of year and because they just announced a new version of the bike for 2017.

This is the bike that I'm looking at. http://donandroys.com/Motorcycles-Kawasaki-Ninja-650-2016-6610a5fe-132c-4d3b-b12f-a6550121a8d4 I took it for a test ride on Saturday and I was pretty impressed with how smooth it was and how much wind protection there was.

http://www.sportrider.com/sites/sportrider.com/files/styles/medium_1x_/public/images/2015/10/2016-kawasaki-ninja-650-grey.jpg?itok=gLPNh51d

After going home and doing a little research it looked like the bike was compared to the Yamaha FZ-07 a lot...and the FZ-07 usually won. Of course one of the reasons is that the FZ-07 has a lower MSRP so the argument was always "bang for your buck" the Yamaha is better. They are also going below MSRP but not as low as the Ninja. Of course now I need to try to track one down to test ride before I make a decision. I'm pretty sure the FZ-07 is going to be the more fun bike but I think the wind protection isn't going to be enough. We'll see if the sensible side or the fun side wins.

Anyway....back to the subject.

To this point in my life I've only owned 3 bikes. The first being a Suzuki GS 500E. I think part of the reason I thought the Ninja was so smooth was that I expected it to feel a little more like the GS. That thing vibrated like hell at 70mph. It sure was a great first bike. I had it topped out a number of times and would have kept going faster if I could have. Luckily I couldn't. It also taught me that I'm terrible at wheelies so I shouldn't bother too much on whatever bike I got next.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l83/rdiderich/IMG_0142.jpg

The next bike couldn't have been much different. I went to the dealer thinking that I would get a Katana. It just happened that a 2003 Kawasaki ZZR1200 was sitting right next to it. I couldn't understand why I would want to only pay about $1500 less for a 600cc Katana (or whatever size it was) instead of getting a 1200cc bike that looked very similar. Well I ended up pulling the trigger on the ZZR and I'm very glad I did. That bike took me on a number of trips around the country that I'll never forget.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/BSTON/Motorcycle/ZZR_web.jpg

Fast forward and a lot of things changed. I moved from St. Louis to Milwaukee and also had twins. Having moved away from the guys that I enjoyed riding with, not being able to ride year round due to weather conditions, and having a job where I commuted with my wife (that hates riding) I was barely riding at all. I WAS spending my time doing something else though. Autocross racing. I got this stupid idea that I should buy a full blown race car instead of using the normal street cars that most people use. Well my wife didn't want me having a bike that I didn't ride AND a race car that I would barely drive so I sold the bike and got this thing:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e121/BSTON/B-Mod/image.jpeg

It's not technically a motorcycle but it had an 08 Honda CBR1000RR motor in it so it's close enough.  ;D It was a blast but if you know anything about autocross you know that there isn't much actual driving. After a year and a half the deal that I made with someone else to trailer and maintain the car fell through so I ended up selling it.

Then came the Savage. My friend had been drooling over the Ryca kit for a while and it got me thinking about a bike again too. I figured with my commute with my wife that most of my riding would just be around town and in the evening for going to work out so I pulled the trigger on it. That brings me to where I am today on bikes that I've owned.

The ZZR is by far the fastest bike that I've ridden. Most of the others are pretty random. Kawasaki GPZ550, a couple Kawasaki Concourses, a handful of Harley Road Kings,  Kawasaki Katana, BMW R1200C, Yamaha YZF600,  Triumph Street Twin, and a Buell Firebolt (I think). I remember test riding a Buell but I can't remember which one.

So what are everyone else's favorite bikes to bikes that you've owned. I know a couple people on here have some smaller sport bikes. Anyone else venture away from cruisers?

I rode/raced dirt bikes until I graduated form high school, and then had a Suzuki RE-5 Wankel that I only put 1,000 miles before I wen to college and sold it.

After College I did the autocross thing.  I built a 914-6  Porsche that could be street driven - but it wasn't all that comfortable on the street as it was set up for autocross and was fast and nimble, and it liked to follow pavement grooves!  It weighed 2,140 pounds and had a 3.5 litre twin plug racing motor....1/4 mile times were in the 12's.  Like you.....I enjoyed doing that for several years, then I just got tired of spending all day in an asphalt parking lot for 3 minutes of driving time.

http://i64.tinypic.com/2uyj15h.jpg

After more than 35 years without a motorcycle, I got back in with the purchase of a Suzuki RL250 trials motorcycle, then a Sherco trials motorcycle....then a Kawasaki Super Sherpa dual sport, then the Savage.  Then I sold the trials bike and bought a used ST1100 Honda, then a broken Ninja 250 that I fixed.  After a couple years on the "too big for me" ST1100 I sold it and bought a Honda NT700.  (My current stable is the Savage Cafe', the NT700 and the Ninja 250).

How many miles do you commute each day?  In all weather conditions?

If you really want an interstate commuter bike....I think you should skip the "sport" bike and get a "sport touring" bike.  The have more comfortable seating, better weather protection, and generally already have some form of storage on them.  The ST1100 is a great bike that can easily go 200,000 miles with maintenance, and they are very reliable and affordable.  They are just a bit big and heavy for hustling on the Dragon - but on the Cherohala Skyway it was really in it's element on those big sweepers.  If you have a 32" inseam....they are a great bike.  the same qualities can be found in the newer ST1300 and Kawasaki Concours or FJR Yamaha - although I have heard the ST1300 and FJR can direct a lot of heat toward the rider in slow traffic in the summer.

There are also mid size sport touring bikes like the Honda NT700 that I bought that are lighter and still very capable of doing interstate speeds without any problems.  The BMW  R1100 & R1150 can be had in the $ 5,000 range and are great commuter bikes (I just haven't done BMW as I like having local dealers when I need parts).

Title: Re: What other bikes have you owned / ridden
Post by BSTON on 10/10/16 at 07:52:20

I just don't want to go with the big sport touring bike. I had that in the ZZR and felt the exact same way you did with the Deal's Gap area. The Cherohala Skyway was about my favorite road in the area to ride with the dragon being too much of a hustle.

The Ninja 650 is very much a commuter bike. The seating position is right at straight up and down with fairly low pegs. The windshield also has some adjustability to go higher than what it is in the picture.

I thought about the adventure sport style bike and had actually planned on test riding a KLR 650 but I didn't want to after the Ninja. The Ninja was actually a more upright seating position than what I want. If I get one I would lower the bars a bit.

Right now my commute is 28.5 miles with the vast majority being 70mph interstate. Most of the roads in the area are very straight too so even the scenic route only has a couple corners (and it takes an additional 15-20 minutes). I used to ride as long as it was above 32degrees. I've gotten softer over the years though. Plus usually by the time it's down to that temp in this area there is snow and salt on the roads anyway. On the Ryca my cutoff is about 50 degrees in the morning. I think with the Ninja I could make it down to 40 fairly comfortably.

I couldn't find a picture of my first bike, it was an old Honda Shadow.

2011 Street Bob, the bike I spend the most time/money on, loved that one.

I'm in my mid fifty's and I have been riding since the age of 10. In my nearly half a decade as a rider I've owned just about every style of bike there is and I have gone through just about every phase of riding and ownership.

I happen to like the ZX-650 that you are looking at. I have a friend who has one and she has nothing bad to say about it. It's fun to ride, is economical to own and checks many of my boxes. And yes, I would cross shop that with the FZ-07...and while I was at the Yamaha dealership I'd probably have to throw a leg over the FZ-09 because...well...triple. And while we're on the subject of triples...one that is a perfect commuter/travel bike is the FJ-09.

In my experience, no one can help you with the "what bike" question. A bike either speaks to you or it doesn't. There's no other rational explanation (nor is one needed). If this bike will be a commuter bike; and looking at your commute its probably a mindless blast down the interstate (with the exception of the cages that never see you) - which makes me think cruiser and or tourer. Comfort, protection and the ability to store stuff (lunch, laptop, dry clothes) probably should take precedence over everything else.

Reliability and comfort and the ability to handle the speed and Still have the Ooomph to pass.
You Have a
Cross town, running around bike.
Now, you need a commuter.

Chris - I definitely was not expecting the Daytona after the first couple of cruisers.

I know that nobody will make the final decision but me, but finding out if people have some bike that I haven't thought about or have the current bike and love/hate it can make a difference.

I've read my fair number of reviews to get the "first ride" experience from people. It's the day-to-day things that you don't hear about. Mirrors that won't stay in place, fasteners that come loose or rattle, fuses that always blow...things like that.

I figured it was also a good chance just to see what bikes people have had other than the Savage. You never know.

Only imported for a few years. Considered overpriced. That's the burden of Quality. No cam chains, and shims on the valves..

Ya, the Daytona was my least favorite bike I think. Don't get me wrong it was plenty fast, and fun in the curves, but I just don't think a traditional sport bike is for me. I really miss the Ducati.

$5300 is only a couple of hundred more than the price of a new 2016 Ninja 300 in my neck of the woods. One or two year old used 650s are in the 5k range around here. If you like the bike, that's a great deal.

I feel the same way about my little Ninja 250....I just don't like the sportbike squid image. (With my full coverage helmet and tinted visor I look squidlike).

The little Ninja is getting a "sportbikectomy" this winter.

Other than my S40 that I bought 4+ years ago as my first bike ever, I recently acquired this Ninja.  Hope to add to my collection next year with an older retro scrambler or something of the like.

I've ridden piles of different dirt bikes.  I started street riding on a '71 Honda 350 with no way to start it other than to roll it.  I rode that for several years then bought a '76 Goldwing...very nice bike.  You will drag the heads, valve covers actually, if you lean too far.  Like riding down the road in your easy chair. Had a Batavus motorcycle style moped for a while.  It was great for putting around town.

I bought my Savage about 4 years ago and 2 years ago bought a little ninja.

The ninja is great for flogging around the side streets and twisties.  The windscreen directs all the breeze right to my upper chest and face so it makes it colder during the winter.  The heat coming off the radiator is nice though. The little ninja will handle the highway speeds with no problem but gets a little buzzy.

I bought a Yamaha Virago 535 a while back.  Haven't really had a chance to ride it.  It had been sitting for several years.  Finally got the carbs off and cleaned.  It's misfiring on one cylinder. I'll get that squared away one day and have it riding then.  It came with a Corbin seat and it sits really comfortable.

I've ridden a Ninja 650.  It was a great riding bike. Plenty of power without being peaky. It's still a twin so you get decent pull from it without winding it out.  The seating position was quite good for me.  Like you said, almost straight up. Still had the issue with the air deflecting too low from the windscreen. It felt heavy enough for long rides without beating you to death but still small enough that it wouldn't wear you out going through town either. The sport bike seat, as with most, could stand some modification to make it into a good long distance rider.

Check out the competition around the same size as the Ninja you're looking at and see if any of them speak to you. It's more about what feels right than saving a few dollars.  If you don't like it, you won't ride it. I don't see how you could go wrong with the Ninja 650. They are known for being good, dependable, comfortable bikes.

Have six in my garage and another at a friends house , do I really have to list them ?
I would guess in 40 years of riding I probably owned around 20 bikes
In that same 40 years guess I have rode about 70 to 80 bikes, always loved riding different bikes

I'm quite sure my older brother had that very same hat. It was made of yarn and cut-up Budweiser cans.

I had several little brothers of the TS250; My first bike was a new '73 TS50 and I graduated to a TS125 and TS185. I also had TM125 and TM250 (same bikes without road-going stuff) and my brother had the beast of beasts, a TM400. An unridable heap...but I'd love to have one today.

My best friend had one of those.  I remember the throttle was like a light switch....the power was either ON or Off.  I also remember the back of the bike bouncing from left to right when he would hit the whoops.  I raced it in one moto when he hurt himself in the first.....I rode my TM125 when my class raced, then got on his bike for the 400 class....it was not an easy transition to make. At the exit of every corner I would grab a handful of throttle on the TM400 like I did on the 125...and either the front wheel would shoot straight up in the air....or the back of the bike would swing waaaaay out!  (I would have been much faster if I had ridden my 125 in the 400 class).

I think it was 1960 when I bought my first bike.   While still in school I started buying, fixing and selling old bikes. I always had 2 or 3 at any time and worked my way up to what were considered the best bikes available at that time, the British twins.  All the small bikes then were European, the Japanese bikes were starting to be imported but in farm country we never saw any of them.

After college I road for only about 2 or 3 years and then didn't ride again until I bought my Savage  over 40 years later.  Currently I have four bikes, the S40, a Moto Guzzi, an old BMW and a small Honda.  I ride the S40 more than the others combined because it is light but still has adequate power.

Ugh. I finally got into more details with the dealer on what the final price would be for the Ninja 650. I forgot how much they add on. This dealer wants $500 for freight and setup and $109 for documentation. Add in tax and it's $1000 more than the advertised price. I knew it would be more but not that much more.

It just so happens that a 2015 model was posted on craigslist near me that only has 200 miles on it and it would be about $1400 less.

This dealer wants $500 for freight and setup and $109 for documentation. Add in tax and it's $1000 more than the advertised price. I knew it would be more but not that much more.

And that is why I haven't purchased a new bike since 1983 (GN400). I have purchased well over 25 bikes in that time, all slightly used and at a fraction of new.

When I started looking for a second bike I had no intentions of buying a new one. Then I saw what they were advertising these for. It's still a good deal but not as good as I thought it was going to be. If this particular 2015 wasn't on Craigslist I'd be putting a deposit on the new one.

I picked up motorcycle number 4 today. 2015 Kawasaki Ninja 650 in white. The guy bought it this spring to ride along with his son. Son moved away to college and left his bike (Kawasaki Z1000) behind. He put a grand total of 183 miles on the Ninja...or just over 1 tank of gas. I did a little over 80 just on the ride home.  ;D

I'm surprised he rode it a Foot! He's pretty dang short.. Doesn't look old enough for a license, much less college.

And just exactly How can anyone expect to not Fail IF

Son moved away to college and left his bike (Kawasaki Z1000) behind.

He has already demonstrated that he is an EeeDeeYutt?
Leave a machine like that at home? Fo Real Man?

The Ninja 650 is definitely a comfortable bike. From a distance it looks like a sport bike but the seating position is nothing like one. The position and layout of the pegs is really all that I'm not super keen about. They are just a little too far back. Plus the way that they are integrated with the passenger pegs, my heels hit the supports and that pushed them out a little, making me a little pigeon toed. I'm assuming that if I can work around that somehow it will be a little more comfortable.

I had a short ride to make last night so I jumped back on the Ryca instead of taking the Ninja. I don't know if it could be much different from the Ninja. The bars are so low, the seat is rock hard, and there's so much shaking / vibration in comparison. That said, I had a grin on my face the whole time I was riding it.

Just for Kris01, here's a better picture of the Ninja.

I'm more than a little concerned about how much it's going to show stuff like that. I really like things to be clean and orderly but don't like taking a lot of time to keep it that way. We'll see how it goes.

It was in the upper 40s this morning for my commute. I had left my balaclava at the office on Monday so I didn't have it this morning. I really didn't get too cold though. My hands and thighs seemed to take the most of it...but I was still wearing thin gloves and just jeans though so I stayed fairly warm considering. It gives me hope that I can get at least a couple more weeks of commuting in before it's painful.

This is not a pic of mine but it's a fairly accurate representation. I wish I had some pics of mine. I have great memories of riding with my dad on this bike when I was 5 or 6. He passed away in '99. To this day I get nostalgic when I hear a 2-stroke and smell the fumes!

The little GN250 that brought me back to motorcycling

Title: Re: What other bikes have you owned / ridden

I suppose I really started riding with a little Tomos moped when I started going to NC State back in the mid-eighties. Although it probably wasn't very smart, I used to ride that little moped all around the construction zones near my neighborhood and get it muddy about every week. After getting it confused with a dirt bike and being stupid by leaving it out in the rain over my 2nd summer, it pretty much turned into junk.

But my first "real" motorcycle was a 1993 Honda Nighthawk 250. I used to ride the ever lovin' crap out of that bike all around Raleigh. From there, I moved up to a Nighthawk 750 and then a few years later, I dabbled with a couple of Harley Fatboys. Those Hogs look nice, and they sound good but holy pre-oly they are waaaay too heavy to maneuver easily.

When I look back at it now, that little 250 was my all time favorite even though I couldn't get past 60 MPH on the darned thing.

1977 Yamaha RD200.  Bought it at age 15 or so and used it to get to work.  It was a 2-stroke twin with a startling power band!  It was the blue and gold version with chrome fenders.  So quick!

1978 Yamaha XS400.  Put on small, glass-pack slash pipes, drop bars and a quarter fairing to make a café bike.  Need to find some pics of that old bike!  I was hit by a car coming home from work at age 17.  Landed on my face after flying over the car.  Bike was totaled and I was almost totaled, too.  After that, didn't ride except some 3-wheelers in the sand pits and putted around on my room mate's 883 Sportster.

Fast forward to 2008 when I bought a Genuine Buddy 150cc scooter as a way to avoid buying an extra car when my twins were old enough to drive.  I let them drive my truck to school and I took the scooter for work.  Did some "mods" to get that scooter moving fast and put 40K miles on it.  Rode year round in Denver as long as there was no snow or ice on the ground.  Heavy rain, hail, 15 degrees, 100 degrees etc...

Bought my 2008 S40 in May of 2014 and ended up selling the scooter because I just wasn't riding it anymore.  I've put 11K miles on the S40 since I got it  8-)

My first bike was one of these, a Piatti. Only a mother could love it. Two days after I got it I ended up sliding sideways on two wheels and a foot board into parked car.http://https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25798753/Piatti.jpg

And one of these:
http://https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25798753/BSA-1965-C15-SS80-Sport-Star.jpg
The Sports Star was also designated the SS80. 80 was supposed to be its top speed. But when you tried to get there, things fell off. The rear fender came loose on the way home from the dealer on the day I bought it, and it stopped dead a couple of times when the connector on the back of the ignition switch vibrated loose.
I really appreciate the counterbalance shaft on the S40.

Two bikes I wished I'd never sold.

About 20 years ago I sold my 71 Triumph TR6.  It was a mildly customized rescued flat tracker.  Had a stock seat and tank with tall tracker bars, but no battery, no speedometer or tach, no turn signals, hi/low toggle on the headlamp, no key, not switches on the bars except for a kill switch, no side panels or airbox, oil cooler and regulator hanging under the seat, shifted on the right rear brake on the left, 69 Impala taillight, subtle ghost flames and a really cool ARD belt drive magneto.

Sadly, I never took a picture of that bike, but here is an example of the ARD magneto.  The distributor cap is on the backside.

http://fagengine.com/wp-content/gallery/work/tr6r-ard-magneto.jpg

The other bike I "stole" from my dad when I was in high school.  It was a 73 Suzuki T500 2-smoker.  Orange and white.  I thought it was ugly back then mid to late-80s) but wished I had it now.

http://https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hW08JzcZwzA/maxresdefault.jpg

I rode it around a few years and then let my buddy talk me into selling it to him for $300.  He took it to college and left it for dead when it wouldn't fire up one day that fall.  I said "You should have called me, I would have come down and picked it up for $250!"

If only I had it today...

My buddy taught me how to ride on his BSA 650 in'69.  '69 CB 450, '69 CB 750, '73 Norton 750....    Long break involving wife and children..  '95 750 Nighthawk. Another long break until 12/14 when I bought the '07 S40...  I'd love to have any one of them today... In fact, I saw a Kawasaki W650 on Craigslist....... 8-)

I don't get excited about much any more, but my SIL is getting my W650 fixed up and road worthy.
I'd look at the CL ad if you could link to it without a hassle.

Starting in 1976:
- Kawasaki ke80
- Honda CB350 - motor blew.
- Honda CB550 - crashed, bent fork, frame. Engine was fine.
- Kawasaki Z1 - impounded by law enforcement for racing.
- Kawasaki KZ1000 - loaned it to a friend who lost it.
<Stopped riding because it was time to sort out my life(and friends)>
...time passed to somewhere, not sure where....
<All the kids out on their own, time to ride, take MSF>
- Suzuki Savage (still have)
- Honda CTX 700 (sold on CL - very uncomfortable)
- Suzuki Vstrom 650 (still have - most comfortable bike I've ever owned)

I'll continue to own a Savage/S40 until the model becomes difficult to maintain (no more parts). After that, I may try the SYM Wolf 150.

No pics, but here is my list:

Allstate Moped
Honda 50 Sport
Honda 150 (sometimes, but erroneously, called a "Dream")
Honda 305 SuperHawk - the model that pretty much sealed Honda's entrance to USA
Honda Super 90 (to do riding in "Hare Scrambles" through the woods
Honda 125 dirt bike - the "dirt bike" was a joke - it was terrible!
Yamaha 360 Scrambler - terrible bike
Bultaco 250 dirt bike - good bike, but terrible supply of parts!
Hodaka 125 "Super Combat"
Hodaka 250 "Thunderdog" - Enduro bike, best low end torque of any 2-stroke I have ever ridden!
BMW - 1968 R50 - I completely rebuilt this one and sold when kids were little - didn't want them to grow up without a Dad
BMW - 1974 R90 - partially rebuilt - sold for same reason as above
BMW - 1978 R100 - purchased about 4 years ago, after 25 years off, and sold just a few months ago, as it was too heavy and cumbersome for me and my back.  I took a 2,500 mile trip on this one with my son a few years ago, who was riding his 1987 BMW K100.
Suzuki Savage - I really enjoy this one as it is easy to handle and get on, seems to run really smoothly, and hopefully it will be very reliable!  Probably my last bike!  It looks exactly like the one at the home page of this web site.

I've always seemed to gravitate to thumpers, although I have strayed at times.

'67 Honda S90 - Bought in '67 before I had a license. I was all over the fields and woods around our house.
'65 Ducati 250 Scrampler - My ride the last 2 years of high school and then college.
Bikeless for 3 years
'76? Yamaha RD200 - Bought it wrecked. A cute little buzz bomb.
'67 BSA 441 Victor bought in 1979 kept it until 1984.
Bikeless for about 25 years due to family.
'01 Suzuki Savage - Bought about 2009. Loved that bike.
'98 Kawasaki Vulcan 800B - Bought around 2012. I needed something a little physically larger than the Savage, although I'd still rather have the Savage.
'78 Honda CX500 - My son needed to sell it. Complete but weathered. I can't decide whether to cafe, restore or just leave as a survivor. It is a nice alternative ride to the Vulcan.

The Ducati, BSA and Savage were my favorites.

Edit: These pics are not of my bikes. My Duc had a candy blue gas tank, done by my dad and me. The RD and the BSA pics are dead ringers for the ones I had.
