Title: Flat on rear tire at 6000 miles.
Post by Job on 10/05/16 at 17:03:36

Yesterday I was riding up to my church to do some yard work and there was a loud "bang". At first I thought the muffler blew out and then it dawned on me that I had a flat tire. I was only moving about 10 mph as I approached a red light so no real drama. When I looked at the tire I couldn't believe how worn out it was at 6000 miles. I had checked it last week before a 250 mile run through the mountains. Is it possible that it could have scrubbed of the entire center tread in one trip? Well at any rate I have new tires and tubes on order. I will make sure of the tread shape in the future. Jeff

Well that depends on who you were chasing (or who was chasing you).

How old is the tire?  They get hard as they age and wear faster, and lose the flexibility and traction they once had.  Hot weather can make them wear faster as well.

My original IRC tires lasted about that long (or less). What brand were they?

My original IRC rear was down to the canvas at 6 or eight thousand, and it was only because I looked, that it didn't go bang.

Yes, that's a thing. When the tyre's just about done, that last little bit of tread vanishes really quickly. Lucky you were going slowly.  8-)

OK.....I am going to answer my own question.

At the bottom of his posts it shows that his bike is a 2009 - so most likely the bike and tire have 6,000 miles on them, and they are 7 years old.

It was time for a fresh tires!

Dave and all, yes the tires are the original IRC. I had checked them before the ride a week ago and there was some center tread. When the tire blew I was amazed that the center was as smooth as a babies behind. I am just glad they didn't blow while up on the mountain. My new Shinko 230's should be here this week.

Dave, I got the new Shinko 230's mounted and new front brake pads installed. I bought this bike in May with 2250 miles on it. It now has 6250 on it the last 250 on the new Shinko tires. What a difference in the ride. Highway tar snakes and road groves don't cause the front end death wobbles anymore. If I get even close to the mileage others have written about on these tires I will be delighted[ch128512][ch128512][ch128512].  Jeff.
