Title: Tail light options with stock fender.
Post by eagleno49 on 09/28/16 at 19:38:40

Hello, I recently purchased a yellow 2000 savage.  I like the shape of the rear fender, but the square tail light is hideous.  Has anyone mounted a round one like a model A light on it?  I have seen ToesNose's solution but are there any others?  I can make the bracket, I would like to see what others have done to get ideas.
Thanks
Brian

Mine has a replica Miller "STOP" light as seen on Velocette and Vincent motorcycles.
Welcome aboard.

you can take the tail light off, reflector and the license plate light off.
and mount a cat eye tail light just above the plate.

Whatever you do, don't get a cheap non DOT rated light. A cool looking but dim tail light isn't worth not being seen and rear ended.

The best advice given. I have rode behind people with aftermarket tail lights and turn signals that are not DOT approved and they are very dim and almost impossible to see in day light. The brighter, the better.

Same for me......several times I have ridden behind bikes with aftermarket turn signals or tail lights, and they are nearly invisible in daylight or sunlight.

It is not a good test to have the bike parked in the garage and stand back 20 feet to view the light.  Take it out in direct sunlight, and get back 200 feet - which is how far back you want that distracted cager to see that you are slowing down or turning!

The Chinese LED stuff you buy for $ 12, most likely isn't going to keep you safe!

Same for late model cars, some have really bad lights.
especially the ones trying for the LED look.

Or the folks that put the dark smoke covers over the lights!

Kinda' funny....some folks are tinting their lights and making them dark - while others are spending money on making their brighter!

I will not use a cheap light.  Does anyone have any pictures of different light setups used with a stock fender?

I bought a Harley tail light and made a bracket for it, as well as the license plate and mounted it under the fender. The light had a clear section on the top so the license plate could be mounted above. I just flipped the light upside down. Worked really well and looked a lot nicer than the stock box light.

It looks like the light fills the area nicely.  Thanks for the picture.
