Title: My project 2000 Suzuki Savage
Post by tensleep80 on 09/14/16 at 17:21:43

I have been looking for another bike to work on, and I found this one on Craigslist.  It needs lots of work, non-running, evidence of unknown prior work, too, but it has a clean title, 6042 miles and is complete, except for the small primary pulley for the final belt drive.  What do you think?

TenSleep,

IMHO, bikes that have been stored outdoors for a long period of time are very difficult to restore. Especially the wiring and electrics can be a real PITA.

Hmmm, not sure why it won't open the folder.  Are you cutting and pasting or clicking on the link? It should be a hotlink.

You are quite correct.  I didn't spend much on it, and if I can't get it running relatively quickly, it is going down the road.  I do want to see if I can expand my skills.

I can click on it and it opens.

I'd be up for a challenge if it's running and real cheap! Finished bike would be nothing like this! 8-)

I could get it to open at work....wouldn't open on my laptop.

I do have a Yahoo account on my work computer, maybe that made the difference.

You are missing the cover on the Countershaft pulley....not the primary.  The "primary" gears on this bike are the ones between the crankshaft and the clutch....under the right side engine cover.

Thanks for the correction - gotta get my terminology down.

Tensleep,  a project, but who knows. looking at the pics ,I'd start by checking that front pulley and teeth on the shaft, could be a deal braker if their torn up.  Next is the engine ,compression(take out the plug spray some fogging oil in the cylinder,it's been setting and you don't want to scratch the walls) see if you can turn it over by hand(not frozen).next fuel, gas tank rusty? carb dirty? next spark (new plug) new battery or jump it off a car(not running) . If it spits or spuders (maybe with a shot of starter fluid) you've got a project!   ps .Id shitcan the gas filter, change the oil but not the filter, and the RTV on the front maybe just loose foot peg mounting bolts.  Good Luck!

If the teeth on the pulley are trashed, meehhh, not good, but, a price negotiating event.

Teeth on the shaft trashed?
I would not be a buyer unless I needed everything except the motor. .

Good list - thanks!  How would you go about turning over the engine by hand?

Dang, I haven't had a chance at this bike yet - working Saturdays and will probably be working 12 hr shifts next week, so I may not get to it until October.

The shaft requires splitting the cases .

I'm not splittin' the case for anything...
I'd tack weld the pulley...  DONE!...
;D ;D ;D

Then, ride it like I stole for while, and sell it...

So ashamed,............ :-[

Nawww,.   really...  it'd prolly go 200k and never need attention...

Yeah, welding works, I spose..beats buying the shaft and splitting the engine,, gackk, what a headache.

Ten sleep, just as you would if you were setting your valves ,remove the small plug and use a socket ,rotate the same as your front wheel turns counter clock wise.     If the teeth on the shaft are only slightly worn you could try a product called bearing mount, used in placing bearing in rebuilt car motors so as not to spin them ,good stuff!  I wouldn't try welding, the pulley is torqued to about 94 ft/lbs I don't know how you could apply that much pressure to the pulley and then weld it,and if you needed to replace the o-ring and seal behind it you are in big trouble.

Thanks for the tips and the procedure to turn the motor over by hand - that will be a big help.
