Title: Need to raise up back end
Post by Bobber on 09/14/16 at 14:01:47

Would a taller set of shocks raise up the back seat height?  Any idea's?  Thinking about a hard tail.  Thanks for your help.

12 inch Intruder 800 shocks will raise seat height and improve the ride.  You definitely won't improve the ride with a hard tail, and the majority of the hard tails I've seen have effectively lowered the seat height .

Bobber Taller shocks will lift the rear, and give a better ride with less bottoming out(longer travel). most have used shocks off a 800 suk or Progressive shocks.      you can also use use hard metal struts in place of the shocks, but the ride is harsh, and handleing poorer .After market hardtails won't give you the seat lift your looking for.

I can get the rear end where I want it with hard tail struts, I'd just make them myself but the rear wheel skipping on bumps is my concern.  Seat has springs so my tushy would be fine.

Hard tail? You are deliberately going back in time.

I can remember riding back to my army camp on a rigid BSA 350 many years ago, at 20 years of age, crawling off the bike in pain at the guard house and not knowing any better.

I will not be doing that again! For what purpose?? ::)

Bike has been chopped 6 inches on the front, rake is good but about 2 inches higher then stock, seat has springs but sits low in the back.  Need to get the back higher so I'm not sliding off the seat.  I guess that's it Norm.

I guess back in time is good for me.  Army veteran as well CW2 retired.

How about longer shocks?

I have a pair of shocks that are 2" longer than stock. They raise the rear end 1.5'

Bobber,
The shocks in question are available from NewBonneville.com They bolt right on to the Zuki and are 2" longer than the Suzuki shocks. The stock muffler gets in the way but I suspect that won't be an issue in your case.

Good luck amigo.

Bobber,
I am not sure but based on what I have learned here, I think so.
I am not sure how long the intruder shocks are. Somebody will chime in with the info you need. Everybody says that the intruder shocks are a good fit.

On thing, if there is anything you need to know somebody will have the info you need. :)

I didn't mean to sound condescending. Some people just like hard tails.

Have you seen this?

I keep asking people what the fascination is with 'hardtails' and the answers are all about 'looks'.
Function, not so much!
2" longer shocks give me all the 'looks' I can handle! 8-)

Thanks for the info.  Got a set of intruder 800 from the same year as my bike.  They look identical just longer.

Just a reminder.....the longer shocks won't work with the stock muffler.  The axle will hit the side of the muffler before you can lower the swing arm enough to get the shock on.

Also....check the clearance between the bracket at the left front of the swing arm that holds the lower chrome belt cover on.  It can hit the countershaft pulley cover where the rear mounting screw for the cover is located.  (Makes it nearly impossible to remove the pulley cover as the shock springs are jamming the cover forward).

Dave,

Is there a modification that can be made to the lower chrome belt cover to get enough clearance?

There are 2 lugs on the front of the swingarm that mount the belt covers.
With the longer shocks, the arm drops enough to pinch the pulley cover and makes it hard to remove the pulley cover.

Install the shocks, remove the cover and you'll see a mark on it.
Remove a little of the lower mickey mouse ear till it clears.

Also, check the belt with the pulley cover off.  There's a bolt on the case that will rub on the belt.  Replace it with a allen button head.

Thanks for the tip on the pulley cover bolt.  Don't have a stock muffler so no problem on the axle.  She does lean hard with the kick stand down.

You can attach something to make it stand up better, but if it's heavy enough to pull down when you hit a bump it'll make it cut out, maybe backfire unless you bypass the interlock.

Guess I can live with the parking lot lean.

people have been known to attach a hockey puck to the bottom of the kickstand.

Title: Re: Need to raise up back end
Post by Bobber on 09/15/16 at 16:25:58

As long as the puck is from a Blackhawks game I'd be fine with that.

Puck it... ;D

2" longer shocks need 2 pucks! or at least mine does!

Title: Re: Need to raise up back end
Post by Bobber on 09/16/16 at 17:14:34

What happens if you just let it lean?

Title: Re: Need to raise up back end
Post by Kris01 on 09/16/16 at 19:12:52

Extra stress on the kickstand, probably not much else.

Post by Bobber on 09/16/16 at 19:17:45

Well I guess the extra stress will be okay.  Just put on a new one.
