Title: My new KLR
Post by cheapnewb24 on 09/11/16 at 20:43:27

We went over 100 miles to go get it. Paid $800.

It's a POS, but it RUNS! http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Laughing/lol-031.gif

Do you know if the idle counter balance upgrade has been done?  This is commonly referred to as the doo hickey.  You will more than likely need to make sure it has a torsion spring as well.  Unfortunately, it is a grenade waiting to happen if it is not done.  Look it up on youtube.

Best regards,

It's a 250, not a 650. I just looked it up. Apparently, the so-called "doohickey" is not a problem.

Sorry for the confusion. It's the "Jr." , not the regular KLR.

To get a legit rideable KLR 650 for $800... Now that WOULD be a deal...  :o

...Maybe not even a fair one. :-/

Well, to give you an idea of how umm...how shall we say it... absent.... the PO was, I'll give you a clue...

Supposedly has motocross racing experience, but brings me the bike with a squeaky bone dry roller chain. The first thing to be noticed was the dragging rear brake, however. He had to heave it off the trailer. After I rode it a bit, I looked at it. Lo, and behold, the brake cable was too tight.

::)  http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Laughing/lol-031.gif

He handed me pliers and I fixed it. I asked him how he could have missed it. He just  talked like he just rode it and never paid much attention.

Gary in NJ, eat your heart out. :P

Oh... and that's not the end of the story... ::)

Here's a link to the KLR 250 Forums. Go bother them with long diatribes with half information where you never listen to advice. See how much they like it.

What steaming pile will you buy next after you turn that poor KLX into an unridable heap?

You want me to spend half a day doing a full memory dump of all thoughts and experiences related to the topic on hand? Don't I make long enough posts?

It's a KLR... the long forgotten baby brother of Kawi's water-cooled pig.

Au Contraire! For with the neglect that thing has taken, it's better off in my hands than the PO's! From the looks of it, if he'd run it much longer with the lack of service, he'd have blown it up! :o

My snide comment was in reference to your "weapons-grade stupid" saying not too long ago. I wonder if I haven't been out-ranked for the Idiot of the Year award. Perhaps the reason you think everything I do is stupid is simply because I have the nerve to talk about some of it. Don't ya think there are some more people here that make mistakes like I do? There's never any drama about it, though. I'm the one that gets the attention 'cause I go on about things, and the others shut their traps and go on about their lives. I've made a lot of mistakes, but I'm learning.

We went over 100 miles to go get the thing. There was no cheaper offer for a modern dual sport on craigslist. The oil was low (but not dry) when we got it. I seem to recall that he claimed to have changed it 2k miles ago. From the rather small difference in mileage on the title compared to the mileage on the odometer, I wonder what complications went on there. :-? There is the possibility that he LIED. >:( Those good ol' boys aren't always good ol' boys.

I added some oil after I got home. Today, I pulled the drain plug and filter and did an inspection. There is some metal in the filter and oil. May be acceptable wear, I hope. There is at least one piece missing from the oil filter assembly. I find that there's supposed to be a metal tube that goes through the filter. It is missing. I wonder if the oil is being filtered properly. I'm gonna fix all this before I run it again.

Part # 16126. Assembly is missing. The oil may be pouring straight through without getting filtered.

Really... How many dumb or neglectful people had hold of this poor thing? I think gizzo may have hit the mark.

I think that poor thing's gonna love me like a puppy after having to live with those people.

At least now I may have learned a neat way to bypass the oil filter.  ;D

Read my link. Something about a screen that the oil passes through. Ignore it at your peril.

I've made a lot of mistakes, but I'm learning.

Two statements.
One is, as of yet, unsubstantiated.
We're all hoping you figure it out.

Ya think? It's not like you had a lot of luck with the Savage.

I wonder if I haven't been out-ranked for the Idiot of the Year award.

I doubt it.
Really... How many dumb or neglectful people had hold of this poor thing?

Where N is the number of PO's I'd say N+1?

I think that poor thing's gonna love me like a puppy after having to live with those people.

Really? Good luck with that.

Seriously though, good luck. I'd usually be surprised that someone would buy such a POS given the obvious signs of neglect you observed, but in this case, I'm really not. On with the show.

Sorry... Looked up the screen issue.  :-/

If you paid attention, what was the most likely thing to cause it to need cleaned out?

Does it LOOK like that might be an issue?

Metal???? :-/

RTV goo???? :-/

http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Confused/sorry.gif

If there's that much metal in there... that it clogs up that screen..., we have a serious problem.

I did find a few blue specks on the filter. :-/

Maybe an issue? http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Confused/sorry.gif

RTV?

By the way... It's only got 6k miles. :-?

So far, there doesn't seem to be much community support anymore for those old bikes as there is for the Savage. I may have to do more homework and less talk with this one. I may be on my own.  :-/

If you don't have it found in the linked questions and observations, you're failing to see crucial thinking.
Remember that thing you said earlier?

I've made a lot of mistakes, but I'm learning.

Avoid another mistake.
Learn to read For The Understanding.

What miles are on it?
What has been done to it?

According to the odo, In the lower 6k range.

Exhaust mod: performance muffler lying around lazily wired on, exhaust clamp loose. The pipe may have a larger size welded on. It's a loose, leaky mess, in other words.

Carb jetting to match: Done by someone else, (Thank goodness) ;D
