I had a high number too, so in essence, I was never close to going. Also, being profoundly hard of hearing, might have kept me stateside. Anyway, the solder is not the one who is in charge of all the deceit. In a fox hole, if your buddy tells you to cover his back, you do, to the bitter end, if need be. It is raw, primitive allegiance, that has escaped many folks understanding, but the very root of a solders existence..... Without this basic trait, and the ability to exhibit it, then all that is left, is uncertainty. I don't believe you are attacking those who served, but as so often, people perceive everyone has blood on their hands, just for being there. |
