Title: loctite on the engine mounts?
Post by cheapnewb24 on 08/27/16 at 15:06:42

Anybody put loctite on the motor mounts? I've noticed that whoever put them in last put blue and green loctite on some of them. :-?

I'm a fan of WD-40 on those kind of fasteners. That way I can recheck them without having to remove, clean the Loctite, and re-goop.
There are two kinds of Green Loctite. One is post-assembly Wick-N-Lok, that one puts on an adjustment screw after it is set. The other one is Sleeve and Bushing Mount, pretty much the toughest Loctite they make. Done right it'd take a torch or hydraulic press to separate parts put together with the later stuff.
Neither one I'd use on motor mounts.
If you have stuff that always loosens and/or falls off, then go with Blue.

I've got the penetrating low strength green and medium strength blue Permatex brand. Don't know for sure what was on it before. Probably similar.

So you like to use WD-40 with no loctite or do you use loctite with WD40?  :-?

Used blue on mine.

Newb,
Loctite  only on clean threads. WD-40 would cancel the stuff out.

The motor mounts have enough torque on them that vibrating loose is unlikely. If it's a concern for you on any fastener then any blue thread locker will give you peace of mind. My motor mount bolts had been thread locked previously and I didn't bother reapplying after having them apart. Clean threads, both male and female, are important. If you have oil or other chemicals in there it can hamper the bond you're hoping to get. If getting an accurate torque is key, say on the head studs for instance, a bit of oil on the threads is the way to go. You wouldn't want to thread lock a fastener like that. I may be muddying the waters more than I'm clarifying anything, time for another pot of coffee. lol

"A bit of oil on the threads" is not recommended.   You over-torquing the bolt/nut and risk damaging the threads. WD-40 is different than "oil".  It's a very poor lubricant.

Different installations, different rules
Read the manual, follow instructions.

Dah !

Everything that holds the chassis parts together on my bike gets Blue Thread locker on it, including the pulley bolts and brake rotor bolts.  Same thing for the bolts for the foot pegs, fenders, triple trees and forks.

The axle bolts and belt adjustment bolts don't get thread locker, nor do the fasteners for the parts that get removed regularly.......fasteners for the seat, tank, handlebar levers....and none of the fasteners that hold the engine together or the bolt the exhaust/intake system to the engine.

I basically lock the parts I don't want falling off.  The Blue Locktite loosens easily when needed, and I do believe is also seals the threads and helps prevent corrosion.

For the engine mounts, the upper ones use nylock nuts.  I use blue loctite on them as well.   The lower mounts (foot pegs), I use blue loctite on.  The back engine mount..  I have never taken it off.

Things said in various places about using oil on threads:
================================
http://benmlee.com/4runner/threads/threads.htm
Testing Conclusion:

-Threads lubricated with 10w-40 oil gave the most consistent results.

-Placing 10w-40 oil on threads does not change the bolt tension.

-Threads with anti-seize paste added to it has as much higher tension (Up to 71% increase) than with dry threads. That extra tension could conceivably strip out the threads. This could be the reason why spark plug installation specify that a 3/4 turn after seating rather than a torque value.
=============

F. Before installing heads spin each head bolt
down on its respective stud to be sure
threads are clean and free of contamination.
Place a drop or two of oil on threads of each
head bolt just prior to final assembly.
NOTE - Light coating of oil on head bolt threads
minimizes friction so torque values will not be
distorted.

Yes, there is some stress taking one (1) loose, but less stress than taking all 4 loose by far.  YOU MUST LUBE OR OIL THE THREADS OR YOU DO NOT GET AN ACCURATE TORQUE READING AT ALL -- all you get is twisting of the stud and jerky erratic movements from the fastener rubbing on the copper washers.

The head plug, mehh,, use goo,, so what if they didn't..

I can't count the number of manuals that have required oil on the threads for critical torque specs on things like Cylinder head studs. I better get ahold of them and let them know they're wrong.  ::)

I'll change my statement to "Do whatever the manual says."

Good idea.
