Title: Motor rebuild
Post by fireman1979a on 08/21/16 at 09:05:02

Ok I don't know if it's just me or what I looked around but couldn't find something for rebuilding my motor. Like a kit or Parts list. My bike locked up on me and I'm wanting to rebuild it for my wife to ride. Can someone please point me in the right direction. Going to rebuild it this fall just wanting to get all the parts before I year it down.

There is no such thing as a "kit" to rebuild your engine. You can't possibly know what you are going to need to fix it until you take it apart far enough to figure out what's wrong anyway. A Suzuki dealer or one of the online parts vendors like Bike Bandit will have a parts list, but probably the first thing you should get is a service manual.

I have a dealer manual for it. You're prob right on taking it apart to see what all I need.

Yeah, you gotta tear into it.
Will it turn over if you pull the plug and put it in a high gear and push?
Run low on oil?
If so, you might be ahead to buy a used engine.
The head/cam journals don't have a shell insert, just a bored hole in the aluminum. The crank bearings and counterweight bearings may be wounded. It's not easy getting in there to see.

There are a few "parts kits" available for an engine rebuild; check the Marketplace here on this site.

It is pretty hard to mess up the bottom end of our engine.
That is usually just found in a catastrophic engine failure.

Generally the bottom end is not your problem.
It's usually the top end, piston or cylinder.
Rebuild don't exist, we are alla cart.

Yep....help us know what happened.  These engines die one of a few ways.  Some folks seize the piston/cylinder when they run the engine out of oil.  Some die when the cam chain tensioner comes apart.  A few have died when an exhaust valve comes apart.  Many more have died when the cam/rockers wear out from using oils with low ZDDP levels, and many more have died when they ran too low of idle speed and ruined the head where the cam journals spin in the head.  There have been a couple of engines whose counterbalancer bearings have come apart and become really noisy, and a couple of bikes have had loose flywheel nuts that makes a horrible racket.
