Title: Add stiffness
Post by Armen on 08/19/16 at 18:42:15

So, with the 18" rear wheel and the Kawi front sprocket, the swingarm cross brace has to be chopped a lot. Kinda worried about how little metal would be left behind, and how flexi the S/A will become. Also worried about how much the whole gag will warp and distort between all the chopping and adding and welding.
So, I figured I'd start by wiping off all the stuff I don't need. Not running a belt guard. Going to use a rod for the rear brake instead of a cable, and so on. So, 4 1/2" grinder, Zip Cut wheels, sanding pads, lots of sparks, lots of dust.
Then I got a piece of rectangular tubing. Coped the ends to fit in the swingarm. Got some lengths of threaded rod (1/2" and 5/8"). Ran the threaded rod through the swingarm pivots, the axle slots, and the shock mounts. Double nutted them all. Figured that'd hold things a bit.
Fit the brace in, and tacked it up. Production welded the top and bottom and let it cool. Figure the two horizontal welds will cause the least distortion. Once it cools down. I'll loosen the S/A threaded gag and preload the nuts against the inside faces of the S/A. The vertical welds are going to want to pull the arms together, so if I have them spread a bit, it should average out.
If it is too wide, I'll just tighten the S/A pivot nut a bit more. If it's too tight, I'll put the threaded rod in there and tighten the nuts against the inner faces of the S/A and spread them out.
For now, it all stays bolted together until I chop out a lot of the existing brace, make a plate to cover the new hole, and weld it all up.
Somewhere in that all, I'll elongate the axle slot toward the front so I can get the belt on without a fight.
Just bolts on!

Nice work!

Thanks  :)
Yea, Batman, no holes :(
I figure the metal I'm chopping off will prob make the added brace a wash, weight wise.
I thought about holes, but it means water would end up there, and it'd rust inside.
Ah well. More chopping and welding to go!

Suzuki & Kawasaki both well known for long flimsy swing arms. Ryca did my S/A. I plan on doing my own with a full length web on the underside.
I did chain conversion so my left shock was waay out in left field so made new lower mount , lower left shock is directly over S/A and shortened top mount too, looks much better, bike handles nice. S/A doesn't need replaced just want to do my own to brush up my fab & welding skills, ya know a fun project !

Ruttly,
Thought about that. Shocks spaced out that far look pretty goofy. Sticking with the belt drive, so I can't move the shocks much.
I've done dozens of braced swingarms on Airhead BMWs. tubular brace under the S/A. Works great.
Been scratching my head about whether there is enough room for the tubular brace on the Savage.
Also thinking about flex in the main frame. the load transfer from the steering head to the S/A is pretty circuitous. Thought about a diagonal brace from below the steering head to above the S/A pivot (made ones for my Airhead), but it'd ruin the clean lines.
Thinking that if I butch up the motor mounts, that might make a difference. Bought an extra set of upper mounts, and will double them up and weld them. Can't do that with the rear ones, as it mounts on both surfaces. Wondered if the twist on the reg mounts could be minimized by a top brace. Made this one. Bolted from the top for now (into not may threads). Will run the bolts from the bottom and use nuts on the top when I yank them off.

I was very surprised how well mine handles with just the progressive shocks & springs, but if I had to redo it I would do the S/A thing and derake the steering head a bit . I get a little push when going into turns too hot, but overall for a cruiser frame with no center supports it handles very quick & light , very nimble. Don't think it will hold up well coming down hard from wheelies, it will break somewhere from those kind of forces. Light frame & heavy engine something gonna give!

I did an 18" rear wheel, 2" longer rear shocks, and changed the top tree to one that allows the fork tubes to live 1/2" lower. All that rotated the chassis enough to make it a flat bike and not a cruiser.
If I need the front end to go lower, I'll change the 19" front hoop to an 18", and maybe move the fork tubes up in the trees a bit.
Too lazy to saw the front of the bike off and change the steering head angle
::)

Oh no , no need to cut it off , way too much work & then it all needs to be aligned
Some angle iron , all thread & nuts, drill, wire welder and my personal favorite tool a Saws All
Adding rake cut from top
Derake cut from bottom
Your skills much more advanced than mine I'm not even going to try to tell you how
Love that tank/seat looks wicked, looks much faster than a Ryca combo
Shapes & lines, must pay attention to shapes & lines !

Armen , Is that a Laguna Seca track map on the wall behind you bike ?

The British thumper look tank should be just high enough to see entire head/ rocker box
BSA , Norton , Enfeild , Triumph
Gives it that tasty Brit One Lunger Look

The tank and seat are aluminum, Indian made copies of a Benelli Mojave.
Gotta say, pretty nice work for the price.
Just have to do all the mounting stuff and make a sub pan for the seat  :P

If you're having trouble getting that stiff enough maybe you should crush up some Viagra and sprinkle it in the paint.

JOG , Only you would waste Viagra in such a manner

But should your motorcycle wheelie for longer than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention.

What is the source for the tank and seat pan?

I knew that was Laguna Seca in Monterey, I had to expand the pic up all the way to read it. That's pretty cool ! Remember watching Kenny Roberts race there, man did he put on a show ! I did a lap on that track on knobby tires wot sliding on knobbies till top of the cork screw , let me tell you the corkscrew doesn't look that scary from any where you can view it but when you come to the top of it , it's pretty freakin hairy , it just drops off & turns
then back on the throttle to the finish line on a 83 XR200R top speed 73 mph drifting on the knobs , what a rush , will never for get that ride !
Later that day I met Kenny Roberts in the pits !
