Got a laptop? Just drag YouTube out to the garage if you can. Or pull your bike into the living room. ;D

Sorry, I don't use phone apps. My phone makes/receives phone calls.

You should be able to find metronome programs for PCs. I've used them in the past for music.

RC Tachometer on Google Play $1.31 for the app for your phone...best part...IT WORKS. Very easy setup even for an old dude. Like the kids say "there's an app for that Uncle Chuck".

Now easy to set idle speed...even though the old ear wasn't too far off.

If it even almost sounds like it's loping,it's too slow. Better high than low.
Flat, level, operating temperature, first gear, and someone knows what speed it should idle at, and what tire size,,

Ohio, apparently one of the easiest ways to check your idle speed is to get your Cabbage warmed up to normal operating temperature, ride it on level pavement in first gear and it should ride at a particular speed without touching the throttle at all. But that's where tire size becomes important.

If you have larger tires, I would ASSUME that the speed would be greater than if your tires were stock. Or for some God forsaken reason, you actually wanted smaller tires on your Baby Boulevard, then it would ride slower with the same idle speed set up on your bike. ;D

For my standard 140/80-15 rear tire, I believe a good idle speed will push me along at 10MPH. But I'm still trying to search through older posts to be sure about those exact numbers. One of the more "seasoned" members could probably verify and/or correct me on the exact combination of tire size vs. speed.

Since I'm still a newbie, I've just got the general concept down so far. Like one of my favorite quotes from W. C. Fields says, "Don't trifle me with the details."

Tire size really doesn't affect speed to much in 1st gear at idle speed.

Serowbots gear chart shows that in 1st gear the bike will be going 36.9 mph at 6,500 rpm. This translates into 5.7 mph for every 1,000 rpm.

So....for 1,000 rpm you should be going 5.7 mph, for 1,100 rpm you should be going 6.2 mph. The 140/90-15 tire only increases this to 6.0 mph at 1,000 rpm, and 6.6 mph for 1,100 rpm.

These numbers seem a little low from what I remember seeing posted previously.....I thought it was up around 9 mph that has been quoted in other threads.

Because going 10MPH, the chart shows that the idle speed would be close to 1600 RPM. That sounds much too fast. I need to take the time to check mine as well. I like the idea of using the YouTube video on my phone with some headphones. Hopefully, that can get me really close before I even step foot out of my driveway. ::)

This is why going up a step in size corrects the speedo error.

1,000rpm is about 6mph...
It will read the same regardless of tire size... ( but, that's too slow for the speedo to read accurately)...

Just make the engine purr,.. instead of lope...

Record your cat's purr... compare... ::) ...(not really)... ;D

Okay, now that we've covered every possible variable and covered one that Isn't,
The idle RPM can be checked by idling across a good smooth place.

My idle RPM changes. If it's just been started, it's low, so, I twist the( notice how it's fat and knobby and easy to adjust? ) adjustment. It's not a
Set it
Forget it
Thing.
It's Okay to fiddle with it.
If you adjust it cold, it's gonna be fast once it's warmed up.
And versa visey..

That may not be so dramatic with a bone stock bike.

I solved all the issues of idle adjustment, speed +/- with new gearing, etc. with a tachometer. And it sits in my line of sight so that I can keep my eyes on the road.

the bottom line is this may be one of those times when more is better! If your idle is to slow,you risk damage,if it's to fast you risk higher oil pressure at idle (oh my!) and using a bit more gas at idle, gas is a bit cheaper than your top end!

Using speed as an idle check works well, however you'll need to use a gps speedo or there's no point.

I'm pretty sure these bikes were Just as Without a tachometer when they were introduced. I don't think GPS or cellphone metronomes or anything like that existed.

Use your God given Brains.
Read the advice.
The tag on the frame says 1100 rpm.
Everyone knows that Low rpm screws it up.
It's not rocket science.
If you can't ride it through a parking lot at idle in low gear because it's too fast for you, gee, maybe it's taching a tad high.
