Title: New2me maintenance
Post by SavageMan99 on 08/14/16 at 09:39:01

So, got my bike, got a lot of the neat-o parts,
but, planning a 500 mile road trip on this 97, 13k bike.
Going to tear down the top end and get into everything except the transmission.
What should I especially look to do, inspect, rebuild, etc...
I'll go through the frame bearings, brakes, and am waiting on a cam chain tensioner to be available. Got a head plug, spark plug and oil filter, have the rapter.

Tearing it down that far might as well bore cylinder and do a wiesco piston, see Versy for that and a valve job, gaskets & seals
Be sure to inspect cam & rockers closely
Oh new cam chain too

Now that I spent all your money , get busy!

Might want to have exhaust port modified  while its apart too

Lancer has the only 94mm Wiseco pistons in existence....they drop into the Savage without the need to bore the cylinder.  If your cylinder is in good shape - a light honing and the new piston/rings will drop right in.

I've put a couple k into my two trucks, 7k into trailers and xxk into a "new" home in VA.  I'm out of k's and about out of $$$ since I gave my 2 weeks at work.  I need it to make the trip from VA then put in the back of a truck and drive that to VA.

Why make it impossible to ride? If it's running and working good, do the basic stuff and ride.. The frame bearings? At 13,000 miles?

Unless the previous owner(s) beat on it, you should be OK for 500 miles (EXCEPT for the cam chain adjuster !!!!) If the bike is running OK, if your adjuster is OK 500 miles at 60-65 MPH is an enjoyable day putting the back roads. (i.e. Stay off the interstates.) 8-)

Really, 500 miles !That's a  walk in park ,check the tensioner, change to the raptor, save the rest for Christmas.

Agreed.  You are getting into rebuild territory here.  I wouldn't want to do a 500 mile trip on a rebuild.

I've got to put the head plug in, check the adjuster, carb jets, and valve gap.  Figure I'm not far from doing the rest.  I'll be pulling the engine and setting it on a bench.  I'll have a full gasket set.
Plus the shocks, fork seals and rear tire.  So, might as well do it right.
I'm saving the performance goodies for a fun upgrade at some later date.
I just don't want to miss something while I'm in it.
I have the clymers, but no owners manual.

Doing the diesel install now.  Been rolling round under the truck, bolting the bell housing and flywheel, starter, exhaust, and oil lines.  Today was fruitful.
Also derusted some cast iron cookware for mom.  Evaporust left over from truck prep.  Finally think I depleted the last 5 gallons.

Hey! If you've got the dime and the time ,go for it ,but with only 13K on the bike you shouldn't have to look at anything other than the tensioner ,petcock ,oil & filter ,and maybe sparkplug, tires if they haven't got 500 mi worth of tread ,and carb needle lift & jets most of which you can do without going inside the engine.

So, pull the covers and call it good.  No need to pull the head to do the plug and valves, right?

Is the plug leaking? If it's  just weeping ,keep an eye on your oil level at each fill up.THe valve adjustment screw  tips tend to harden over time from strikeing the valve stems ,and usually don't need adjustment for a few thousand miles . Are they quiet or loud? then adjust.

I did my leaking plug in less than 3hrs.  You can adjust bthe valves while your at it.  Let it sit overnight to allow the sealant to cure.  Then put 100-200 miles test miles to make sure it's good.

I'd never go far on fresh mods/rebuilds.  I tied that with an old MGB when I was 18yrs old.  Buttoned up the lower end at 1am and hit the road.  Spun a rod bearing at 3am and had to spend the night in the car on the side of the road.  Found a phone in the morning and waited till noon the next day  for my father to show up with a truck.   :-/
