I like !!! did you finish with a clear coat?

Title: Re: Forced patina......
Post by Robawf on 08/01/16 at 19:00:17

Obviously not. You enclose the items doused with vinegar and salt and set a container with ammonia in it in there as well. After several minutes vapors consume the container and what ever is in it. Add some baking soda if you really want to get things happening but hold your breath. This stuff will knock you out! After several hours, neutralize everything with distilled water and scrub with a scotch brite. Clear coat if you want. I added some transparent gold in with my  matte clear coat and like the old with the new look .Its not for everybody, I understand that......and honestly really don't care.

How permanent is the patina? Is it as "dry" as paint or will it wipe off with enough force? Interesting idea!

Its a done deal, its there for good. This process actually etches the raw steel where the chemicals react. When you remove your parts from the enclosure you'll be shocked at the amount of corosion that occurs. I went for three hours on my tank, fender and seat cowl. You use the scotch brite to knock off the the high areas from drips and whatever while enclosed. Wash it off good and let it dry. Its crazy what happens after sitting drying in the sun for an hour. Then to seal the steel from creating more rust, clear coat. Here is a close up of the top of my tank where i sprinkled baking soda on top of the vinegar/salt mixture.

Here's a tip for you. If you want to turn the red rust into black rust then drop the part in boiling water. I guess, maybe, for parts like a gas tank that are large, you could probably put it in a hot heaven.

You basically remove most all of the nasty corrosion while scrubbing  and rinsing with water. At first it looks like not much happened after rinsing but things rapidly change after an hour of ambiant air dry time. The clear coat really highlights the diffrent patterns and colors. Minor dings and imperfections on my tank from 1972 look like they should be there with the finish like this.Worse case scenario, if your unhappy with it.... sand everything down and start over.

i did mine with a similar method but mine turned out more of an orange rust colour. i wire brushed the tank almost clean, then sprayed with vinegar. let it dry in the sun, then sprayed it with a mixture of peroxide and salt. its just a case of spray on the peroxide and let dry, the rust happens before your eyes. just repeat as many or few times as required. then i used a matt clear coat to seal it.

You got me wondering what a slow rust bued steel with clear coat would look like.

I wonder if a steam cleaner would do that.

Slow rust blue is used on old firearms and makes a beautiful finish with the steel showing through. Gunsmithing thing.

I left out one step of the process: lay cheese cloth over all the surfaces your want  effected. This adds to the pattern effect of the corrosion.

beautiful.

You have a supercapacitor battery under the seat, or what?

Dilute phosphoric acid turns iron oxide into iron phosphate. It's black. Available at Kelly paints. Ospho or Jakes maybe. About six bucks a quart. It goes a Long way. I get years out of one.

I tried the gel once.. didn't like it. Liquid works great.

"You have a supercapacitor battery under the seat, or what?"

I have an Antigravity 8 Cell and the starter solenoid  under the seat hump. Just enough room for those two along with the taillight and seat cowl latch set-up. Surprisingly works great and always at peak charge rate. It's 1/3rd the size of the typical  battery. I didn't trust it at first because of the size difference...... I was wrong.

I have the same battery. If I get motivated this winter I might try moving the battery box up and under the seat to hide it.

Here's a size comparison to stock.

Is that a GT185 tank?

Title: Re: Forced patina......
Post by Robawf on 08/23/16 at 07:58:35

It's a GT380 tank. Got it off of Ebay, the inside was in great shape. To get it to sit correctly on the bike, over the cylinder head, I had to cut and box the bottom of the tank about an 1 1/2" then relocate the petcock and attach a new rear mounting bracket . I have countless hours into it but it turned out great.
