Title: vandalised savage
Post by pyke13 on 07/31/16 at 08:54:08

thursday night i went out to check see how much petrol was in the bike as i had to use it for work on friday, its easier for me to get fuel at night than in the morning
i couldnt open the fuel tank. the cap has been glued shut. i filled the key hole with acetone and kept working the key for about an hour until i got it open.

friday morning as i left for work the bike was hard to start, once i got it going it was backfiring and cutting out, the fuel line was full of holes so i replaced that. now the bike starts n idles ok but as soon as i rev it it mis fires and back fires. theres no power and it keeps cutting out.

any ideas on where to start looking for the problem?
ive checked the wiring loom and everything seems ok there
please help as i need to get to work tomorrow morning n the savage is my only transport at the moment

How much acetone do you think went into the gas?
Maybe some of the dissolved glue went through?

Have you recently ditched a girlfriend?
Don't tell Anyone about it.
If anyone says
Hey, I heard about your bike.
You know who did it.

only used about 2ml of acetone, wouldnt think that would be enough to do any harm to the fuel. got an idea who done it but thats not up for discussion on the internet. incriminating evidence n all that, at the moment getting to work on monday is a bigger problem. its 30 miles out into the sticks and theres no busses

Get it running , upright, not on sidestand, goose it and let it cut out.
Hit the kill switch, off the ignition,
Drain the bowl and see if it's full.

The dissolved glue may be in the screen by the float valve.
Or, possibly the screen on the petcock.
Does it run differently on prime?

I would definitely drop the bowl if you can and if possible drop the petcock and clean the tank a bit. May just be trash...they may have somehow gotten crap in your tank too!!!!!

Is the vacuum line full of holes?...

Also,.. how does the oil look in the sightglass.. (they tampered with your gascap,.. they may have tampered with your oil)...

oil looks ok, had float bowl off and it was full with clean looking fuel
it runs ok at idle, will rev ok for a few seconds then it starts spluttering n backfiring

Acetone won't harm the gas or affect the running.  But I hope you took the cap apart after you got it off and flushed it out.

check if you got glue in the gas cap vents.

Sorry Verslagen I must have been typing at the same time that you were replying.

Pyke,

Some of the glue may have clogged the air vents in the gas cap.

You might want to disassemble the cap and soak it in acetone. And after reassembly squirt some 3 in1 oil in the mechanism and then blot away any excess oil with a Kleenex.

Good Luck

That would be the most direct approach. If you drop the bowl, pull the float pin, drop the gas flow control and make sure that screen is clear. If the screws have never been out, don't expect it to be easy. They are not Phillips heads. They are JIS. But, a #2 Phillips that has been ground down, flattening the tip until the X fills the screw X it will work, but having the carb on the bench makes it much easier. A battery powered impact is really good. And some Good penetrating oil, half and half acetone and transmission fluid is great. Wintergreen oil, or Kroil, PB Blaster, in that order.  Antisieze going back together.

Act like something is kinda bugging you, but don't say what around the suspect. Not bad, just be slightly preoccupied, not upset, not angry, just distracted,,see if the suspect says anything about your bike.

If so, just ask,

Why, did you hear something?

Be careful of your tone, no  accusatory implications,

Watch the face...

watch the eyes most people that lie will look to  the side, not directly into your eyes.(look up the tail pipe ,see anything that looks like a potato?)

ive done the petcock check and ive stripped and rebuilt the fuel cap, the petcock is working properly and the fuel tank is venting

it starts and runs perfectly untill i open the throttle, at that point it starts to miss fire, hold the throttle open to see if it clears itself and it just missfires worse. ive replaced the plug and checked the spark. ive also had the carb apart twice now, both times the float bol has been full of clean fuel, i even pulled the fuel line with it running and theres a good flow of fuel into the can.

am i right in the fact theres a decent spark means its fuel related and not electrical? i have had the tank and seat off n cant see anything cut or disconnected. i checked all the multi plugs were connected properly.

i dont know what to try next, any suggestions?? i need to get to work in less than 12hrs

See if they stuck something in the tailpipe!

its a HD sportster muffler ive got on it, theres what looks like a plate about 8 inch into the pipe. there doesnt seem to be any problem with the gasses getting out

Might be worth dumping that fuel and starting fresh.

also if you have a volt meter, check the running voltage.
if it's low it can backfire.

dont have a volt meter handy, its 50 miles away on my other bike.
will give the fuel a change n see what happens

The symptoms indicate that either something is stuck in the main jet, or the ignition is cutting out under load/rpm.

I would take the main jet out and clean it before doing anything else.

Title: Re: vandalised savage
Post by pyke13 on 07/31/16 at 12:46:09

ive changed both the pilot and main jet as i had others the same size sitting, figured it wouldnt hurt as i had the carb in bits anyway.

Post by batman on 07/31/16 at 13:23:40

Pyke, OK that plate is the baffle and it's normal. I'd pull the main jet and drop out the needle jet that the main screws into as that has many small holes that could be plugged and it and the needle jet control your mid throttle fuel.

i would first find who is fing with you . than fix the bike . what will be next ?

Pyke13, It really SUCKS that this happened to you, but I can't resist making the reference to one of my favorite movies.

you need to watch better movies

If you don't check out the fuel Level in the bowl you're not gonna really know much. You can pull the fuel line off the carb and check out the flow rate. Compare the fuel delivery rate of prime position and run. The bike Will idle a long time on just a full bowl.
Does it start up and run okay for a minute or so, then start acting up?

Title: Re: vandalised savage
Post by pyke13 on 08/01/16 at 12:27:57

it starts up and runs fine, its not till i open the throttle it starts to splutter.
let the throttle off n a few seconds later it idles fine without dying.
the fuel flow rate is good, when ive taken the bowls off theve been full of fuel even if the bike spluttered to a standstill. it seems to be getting fuel to the carb no problem, its just not reving without coughing n spluttering. it was running almost perfect the last time i rode it

check your airbox for water... maybe they dumped some in.
and check the air filter while you're at it.

stock petcock or raptor?

Title: Re: vandalised savage
Post by pyke13 on 08/01/16 at 12:42:50

standard petcock, ive done the test and its fine
got a k&n filter and ive cleaned and oiled it as per the manual

Title: Re: vandalised savage
Post by verslagen1 on 08/01/16 at 12:52:54

stuck slide?

were you careful in handling the slide?
finger prints are all it takes to make it sticky.
easy enough to take off the top, pull out the slide, spray with carb cleaner, wipe it off and drop it back in.

some times extra oil on the filter will do the same thing.

Title: Re: vandalised savage
Post by pyke13 on 08/01/16 at 13:03:48

i took the air filter off n checked the slide moves up n down by hand no problems, will take it out n clean it to make sure its ok. is there a way to check its opening when the engines running

So, you have a cone filter, not the stock airbox arrangement?
You can run the bike for a short period with the filter off, just be sure to not allow anything to get injested through the carb except air!!

You will be able to see the slide move up (if it is working right) when you open the throttle.

so today i have stripped and rebuilt the carb again, new jets, slide and butter flie both working as they should, new air filter, new vacuum pipe to petcock,  new spark plug, new fuel and it still wont rev.
any suggestions, it idle perfect its only when i try and rev it it missfires but doesnt stall, let the throttle off and it idles perfect again

Ok guys, is it that the spark isn't advancing?

Not sure if our bikes are under attack.
Some clown put some gum, or something sticky on my left peg yesterday....
I went to break/move my foot, and I thought a shoe string had got tangled up.

Pyke,

It is really good when someone posts that the problem is resolved.
