Title: Thoughts on the oil pump
Post by SavageMan99 on 07/27/16 at 15:06:45

Since oil flow seams to be an issue, it got me wondering.
Could the pump be changed over to a chain drive and thus be spun faster?  There's not a lot of resistance to an oil pump, sobthe drive chain need not be too heavy.
A smaller driven gear, larger drive gear would also yeild the same result.

Oil flow is only an issue at idle, plenty of flow/pressure at speed.

5 psi at 1000/1200 rpm

50 psi at 4000 rpm

and straight gears is more efficient than a chain drive.
what we need is a variable speed drive.   :-?
or adjust the idle speed correctly.

Not that Verslagen needs my help, but I'll back him up.  ;D  If your idle is set correctly then oil pressure never becomes an issue.

I have been trying to crack that idle speed code using sound, rolling throttle speed in 1st.  Can't seem to get it perfect and lose sleep about the thought of idle being too slow.   :-/

Error on the high side and don't worry... be happy.   8-)

Buy a cheap electronic tach. They'll sell them to almost anyone  ::)

Do you have one in mind?  If it's gonna stay on the bike, it should be small.  Please send a link

These are small, and easy to mount and hook up.  The only negative for me is the battery is not replaceable and only lasts 5 years.

Dave, that looks great!

I am tempted to get one that is a temperature gauge.....not because I need one - but I just get a bit curious at times.

(As long as I keep wearing an armored jacket.....I am sure the bike can handle more heat than I can take).

Dave, it would be nice if they had one unit that did both!

I wouldn't even know which one to order for temp.  haha

I had their TrailTech Vapor speedometer on my bike for a couple years.  It did have a Tach and Temperature gauge....along with clock, reset ODO, Total Time, and an outdoor Temperature gauge that was not very accurate.

It is not possible to use the sensor on our spark plug, as it is recessed too deep.  The sensor for the spark plug does fit on the head stud however, and that is a great place to take a temperature reading.

Without laughing too hard, can you show me a pic of this head stud?  Warning: I'm more of a woodworking guy than a mechanic, so I can figure it out w/ enough instructions!

In this photo.....the shiny acorn nut on the right side (down inside the square looking hole) is the rear head stud - this is where I mounted the sensor when I had the Vapor speedometer.

You will have to remove the fuel tank and the chrome head cap cover to access this area.

Son of a.....

Two weeks ago, I installed a Verslagen head plug.  I would have done it then...

Let me ask.  Does the tach only work off the spark plug boot?

The tach sensor wire just wraps around the spark plug wire a few times.

Awesome.  I just got a bit confused of whether that worked based on the temp gauge post that you had.

Actually, Dave, I sent you a pm about an unrelated topic.
