A picture of my Savage. What do think the muffler is?
Planning a mild Bob on it and flat army green bed liner paint job.
To loose the back seat and keep the bags, anything special to do?
Ideas for a simpler back fender to keep water off my back?
Anybody had luck painting the rims and spokes?
Can heavier springs be put on the stock shocks (285 lbs)?
It's not set up (divorce and moving) but I have a few metal working machines, lathe, mill, shaper) to do some work.

You can turn up the preload, but I highly recommend longer shocks as well.
11" or 11 1/2"
If you can find them, intruder shocks work quite well.

I went with "progressive" shocks ,they have one rating that is heavy duty and my girl and I ride together most of the time,our combined weight is 340 lbs and they work well price about $250 .00 bucks

I found my Intruder shocks on eBay. Cheap and minor changes to fit them on the S40.

well if you have to have one you might as well go for a K&N they make tuning harder ,aren't the best at filtering ,and cost dearly($60.00) but they are "pretty".

Just kidding... This is to be an inexpensive, fun bike. I am semi retiring, in fact just handed in my 2 weeks notice and will be moving to Virginia as soon as i get my 86 CUCVs motor together for the towing. I plan on bobbing this mildly and enjoying it. Bought a used filter here, and have the jet set coming.

Not mean,honest! If your doing the rear fender on the cheap,just trim off the last 6-8 inches, round off the lower corners,move the stock taillight back, pound the raised section of the fender after moving the voltage regulator and fill , sand,paint. The V.R. can be moved to the space used for your tool kit ,without having to lengthening the wiring.(but you'll need a bag for your tool kit,and to drill holes in the sides of the chrome cover to release heat).Looking at your muffler ...the blueing makes me think it could be "toast'", the baffles might be removed or maybe rusted away ,I'd go with one of the Harley mufflers for performance and easier tuning ,and cost.
