Title: Voltage Regulator Re-Location
Post by KennyG on 07/17/16 at 22:39:05

I am having trouble with a tailbone injury and would like to relocate the voltage regulator and I cannot find anything in the Technical Document Section.

I do have the traditional "Tailbone Cutout" on my current seat, but that is not enough to completely relieve the pressure.

I am looking for suggestions as to where I can relocate the regulator and pictures.

Thank You,

Kenny G

the rectumfryer is in the middle of the pillion, and shouldn't be near enough to cause an issue.

I did mount it on the side rail for awhile.
drilled out one of the holes and bought a longer bolt.
You might need to loosen the airbox and pull the wires a bit to get enough slack.

Verslagen,

I am kind of long legged and my tailbone is pressed against the hump in the seat where the passenger seat begins.

Are you referring to the side rails as the chrome things that the fender and factory turn signals are attached to?

If you have an old pic laying around that would be helpful.

Verslagen,

Thank you.

I think I will contact Blue Collar Bobbers and see if they will sell the bracket separately from the kit.

This may sound like a hair brained idea, but I'll throw it out there for giggles. If your rear tire never bottoms out enough to hit it, what would be the harm in putting it UNDER the rear fender instead of on top of it, aside from the possibility of bottoming out on it and ripping it off, getting it soaked if you are caught in the rain, it getting hammered to death by road debris, etc.

Yeah, probably a bad idea.  :-?

Personally, I wouldn't mount it to the top of the plastic battery cover.
1. It would get in the way of working on the carb or battery.
2. Plastic?  how long is that gonna last?

I would mount it to the front of the bat box and call it done.
put it on the low side so you can still drop the bowl and get at the screws.

And if you need the rubber wire protector grommet (I don't think you will for this move), ACE here has them but they are over in the home electrical section, not with the nut/bolt/accessory section.

Verslagen,

Mounting on the front of the battery box is a good idea. Is the factory wiring long enough to reach the front mounting location?

Whenever the carburetor is blocked it will definitely need work the next day.

Stew,

I have seen Harley's with the regulator mounted up at the front of the frame right behind the front tire so I guess water and road dirt is not an issue

I am not sure what you mean by the rubber protector grommet?

Wiring from the stator definitely is, the harness might need reworking depending on wire routing.  On beast, I had the rectifier right behind the starter on a plate (no airbox or bat box) but I did some work on the harness.  But I don't recall exactly what, I did move the decomp controller and rewrap the harness entirely as most of it was coming off.

Cool

Reworking the harness shouldn't be a problem. I would prefer not to work on the stator wiring.

You can always just drop it into the airbox (if you have stock air box still). That's where mine is and haven't had any problems over the years.

I moved mine to the the area used for the stock tool bag ,I didn't have to lengthen any wiring ,but did drill holes around the sides of the chrome cover to allow the needed ventilation, and taped the connector which rides above the battery box for weather protection ,never had a problem, however you will have to spring for a fork tool bag. This does have the plus that you have it bolted to the metal plate the tool bag sat on which is grounded .
