Title: Oil filter cover
Post by John E Black on 07/15/16 at 07:07:02

Help
Changed the oil and filter a couple weeks ago and when I started the bike this AM, something (?) blew out the wall of the oil filter cover...had ridden it a couple times with no issues.
What could cause this?????

I would add a pic but cannot figure out how...

Thanks

You put the filter in backwards.

It's doubtful that the engine survived.

How long of rides?

The only thing you can do now is to put the filter in the right way, put a replacement cover on, and see if the engine has survived.

We know it was put in backwards,.. because you're not the first...
It's an easy, but costly mistake...

Sorry...

We've seen two engines destroyed by dealership mechanics that way. It's not gonna change the cost, but maybe you won't feel so bad. I would get the oil drained into a Clean container and look at it, run a magnet through it,but the filter was closing the oil flow off, so, odds are, it's toast. If you had ridden off, nailed it hard and blown the filter through the cover in thirty seconds, you'd be in a statistically better place.

How much Did you ride it before it cracked the cover?
What did you do that made it crack the cover?
Did you wind up the RPMs?

I would guess the top end get starved of oil first and its all downhill from there. That's the first pic I've seen of the cover blowing out , Wow !
