Title: 2nd bike bought
Post by Chase on 07/09/16 at 02:20:00

bought for 2 up riding or if the Mrs wants to ride her own. It's a 88 with 29k bought for 300 which I thought was decent price. The owner was told the engine needed rebuild cause it's problem was "lagging" and sometimes stalling and could only be run switching petcock to prime.......

So after a new raptor mod and a tensioner clone mod, slip in kn filter in stock air box, paint job and a polish it seems to be running ok. I have to pin down a couple of parts that are rattling ( one was headlight assembly where the light attaches to the light bowl ) there is still another part making some type of vibration after 40 mph.

I am concerned of a loud CLACK noise sometimes on shutdown and wondering if that is caused by the older style starter gear and easily fixed with the upgrade. That and a small backfire on shutdown and the minor noise now coming from a unknown part that needs tight down only issues.

Any help on what else that load clack might be would be appreciated

Put your hand on the speedo over 40 mph. If the rattle goes away, check the tech section for a fix. Can't help with the clack.

The small backfire on shut down is normal!

My 96 makes click & whine for maybe a second on shutdown, something to do with starter and its gears/ratchet and I've been told it's normal condition. Some are just louder than others, doesn't affect the way it runs or shuts down just a annoying little noise!

When you shut off, stall the motor so it won't kickback.
Hold the brake, leave it in gear, shut off and let out the clutch.

I would have to guess that clack was the one way clutch engaging.
The other thing you could do is hold the decomp open.

I would do the mod soon as you can.

Yeah release clutch while in gear it won't backfire been doing that. Is the mod just to the new gear or is it a custom thing v?? Can't seem to find the link to the gear mod

You can work the kill switch with the clutch.

It's stock item.  replace the stator cover and one of the idle gears.

Thanks even if the clank isn't the problem I'm guessing the upgrade mod is worth it anyway. Found cover and gear set for $80 from a 2009 just ordered

I have a 95 (the same starter gears you have ) what might help is to replace with slightly larger jets(55/150?) ,switching to a k&n has leaned out your idle mix even more than stock ,making the problem worse.

Parts came in today.

Same bolt pattern for bolts with washers on the cover from a 88 to 09?
How many washers should I have just the one? I know it goes on the limiter gear thing but it's just the one washer or one on both sides of the limiter?

You might want to measure and record bolt lengths like the head cover as no map exists... wish I did.

Yes same pattern.

limiter gets washer on both sides, otherwise splines may eat up cover/case.

I'll get some measurements and donate the 88 case if anyone with a mill or lathe wants to attempt the machining

Same parts number on the washers if anyone knows? And go stainless steel hardened steel?

"Shim 10x18x1"

Will have to check local fastenal shop ace hardware had nothing that thickness
