Title: A bit too much oil; drain or leave it?
Post by sauvage on 06/29/16 at 00:39:41

I'm not sure how this happened because I did an oil and filter change and let it drain for a long time and I only put 2L in which is the correct amount but the oil is a little high. It's up to the top of the sight glass. Or about 5mm above the high line.

Some people advise 'no problems, you'll be fine' other people warn of dire consequences. Should I whip some out or not worry about it?

If you have it on the sidestand and look at the window, is oil visible in the bottom of it?
If you can just barely see it, you're o k.

What oil did you get?

On your side casing it reads 1800cc or 1.8L and there is some oil trapped near the cam lobes , so you should start by adding 1500cc run the bike and then fill to lines.  ,you put in 2000cc ,over filling by 10%, .Go ride it!

@justin_o_guy2, no oil visible in the sight window on sidestand.

@batman, yeah according to the service manual it's 1800 without filter change and 2.4L with filter change so I am a bit puzzled as to how two litres or  2.1L absolute maximum had it reading so high up the glass.

But I will leave it as it is then.

thx

It read high because there is a "bathtub" of oil the cam lobes sit in that doesn't drain and this holds a few oz 's of oil.

Quite a few of us check the oil while the bike is on the side stand. As JOG stated, as long as it's just barely visible at the bottom of the window while on the side stand, you will be good to go.

Just ride at 55-65 mph. It'll disappear fast enough for you!  ;D
