Title: Neutral never takes me anywhere
Post by batman on 06/20/16 at 16:36:26

The only time I put my bike in neutral is my first start of the day(or when the motor is cold)or if I need to reach into my pocket at a toll booth.I've read a few times about how some are sitting at a light,in neutral, when it turns green, they have trouble getting the bike in gear. While this maybe inconvenient, it is also HIGHLY DANGEROUS!!You should never be in neutral at a light or stop sign !If you look in your mirror and see a car not slowing the driver could be distracted,(cell phone?),if you're in gear you have a chance to move to place of safety median, shoulder, lane splitting .If your in neutral and can't get the bike in gear you may leave it to save yourself, but your savage may turn into salvage, and it's a long walk home.If you're not looking behind, you and the bike could be the makeings of a car bike car sandwich .be careful and keep your rear in gear!

+1.  I always quickly slip the clutch just enough to confirm I am in 1st gear at a full stop light. I always watch my mirrors, and as I see the first car come up behind me I "blink" the tail light (I have the blinky LED one) to make sure they see me and are slowing to a stop...and if not, VROOM VROOM and away I go out of harm's way.

I enjoy riding and it's 'relaxing' to me, but I try to stay alert and treat every car as a threat and assume at every driveway and every intersection that someone is about to pull out on me.

All good points Stew, andif you ride toward the center line again you have a better chance to avoid a car pulling out as you can choose to go left or right if you can't stop in time.

I'm gonna respectfully disagree with sitting at the lights with the bike in gear. If the clutch cable snaps, too bad so sad ('cause I ride an Enfield and I don't trust their crappy cables that much). Plus, it gets tiring and must put some wear and tear on the release mechanism. I have no problem dropping into gear at a moments notice. My 2c, FWIW etc.

But if the clutch cable snaps and you are holding the brake like you're supposed to, nothing bad will happen other than the engine will stall.

I treat every person on the road like they're the hangman.

Seems like factory parts last forever while replacements go bad in 2 or 3 years!
