Title: Is my bike cool or something?
Post by SugarBoogers on 06/20/16 at 09:35:26

It's happened to me a couple times. Last night a couple of young guys at a stoplight yelled to me and gave me the thumbs up. I have no idea what they were saying due to my FF helmet. Another time while gassing up a guy said, "That's a nice bike! Is it a Yamaha?" I said, "No, it's a Suzuki." "It's a Suzuki?? It's a nice bike!" Mind you, my bike is 14 years old and cosmetically has seen better days, and besides, I've painted it rattle can fluorescent orange for visibility. Maybe it's the Jardine "muffler" a PO put on it. I don't know. Do you get a lot of approval from strangers?

I don't know if it's oogles of approval, or "good luck keeping up with us" oogloes when I am off with other biker groups for group rides, etc.  It seems as they 'walk the line' of bikes they stop and stare at the single cylinder and sorta turn (I originally said "c0ck" but it changed it to "thingy"....crazy forum) their head sideways. I just smile and answer their questions, and smile even bigger when they are wrestling with their big tanks and I am zipping around having a good time.  It used to bother me, now I enjoy the strange looks. Not to mention I am having as good, if not better, of a time on my bike that cost about 10% or less (literally) than their big bikes.  8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

I once had an 8 yr. old yell something at me out the back of a minivan. His older 16 yr. old sister wanted to race me. Does that make me cool?  :-?

I believe the basic styling of the bike is quite good, I've had one or two say they like it's looks. Whether that has anything to do with the ghastly, and I could say a lot of other things, little "cool" word I don't know.

A lot of people just don't know what to make of a big single; few of them around; sort of like a guy with just one nut or something.

Parking the Savage, guy looking at it with a funny look.
I sez, "Let me help -- it is missing something."
"YEAH!  The second cylinder!"

Mine gets a LOT of double takes. Has been called a Harley, an Indian, a BSA, one old guy asked me when the Manx came back on the market. Age guesses range from the late 1930s to the early 1970s. Absolutely nobody believes 2003 Japanese.

Of course, mine doesn't remotely look stock, the tank looks like an old Scott unit with the solo seat, full rear fender and high mount 7" headlight additions. The beaded tombstone windshield we finished yesterday adds to the con job pretty well.

Enjoy the looks and compliments. These little toy bikes have a very limited following in North America, folks have no clue what they are seeing. Other than something different.

A couple of years ago I pulled into a service station with my stock 1989 Savage. As I rolled past the garage door the mechanic nudged the apprentice and said "look there's the new Harley".

I recently sat on a Sportster, bringing it up off the sidestand wasn't overly clumsy. I'd like to ride one.

My wife gets nice comments about her bike quite often, even from some of the HD guys.  It is refreshing for them to see something different from the metric side of things.

I used to ride a Road King with a Street Glide front end and I have also spent time on a CVO Electra Glide.  I only weigh 150 but I am in good shape and I had no problems at all.

That being said I have been on two wheels for almost five decades.  HDs have an extremely low CG and can be maneuvered at very low speeds if you are careful and patient.

A Sportster would be no problem coming from a Savage.
